Darmstadt has earned its acclaim through its many contributions in the fields of science, art and architecture. STUDYING IN DARMSTADT

A considerably strong aspect of the city’s reputation are its three higher education institutes offering a range of courses and research programs. Universities in Darmstadt are aimed at providing not only a wide range of degree programs but also an innovative teaching approach mainly in the fields of Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Computer Sciences. Of course, there are courses in the fields of Media and Design or Humanities students can choose from as well. Practice is an important component of the courses taught in the universities here as it helps students to build up their skills and prepares them for their future careers. The Technical University of Darmstadt is the largest traditional higher leaning institute in the city with currently over 25,000 students enrolled. The university offers seven Bachelor degree courses and eight Master degree courses that are mostly taught in German, however some modules at Master’s level are taught in English as well. International students can apply for any of the universities in the city, however they might need to show evidence of the level of spoken and written knowledge in the German language as not all courses are taught explicitly in English. Students can find accommodation under the form of a student residence or a flat on the private market. To apply for a room in a dormitory, students can submit an application through the International Office based in their university or directly online through the website of the particular accommodation. The average price of a furnished room in a shared flat located in a student residence hall is around 350 EUR per month with bills included. Alternatively, there are other housing options for rooms, studios or shared flats throughout the city.

DARMSTADT LIFESTYLE

Darmstadt is a very green city with lots of parks and gardens creating a relaxed and comfortable environment where students can unwind from the long study hours. One of the most famous spots outside of the city is the Park Rosenhöhe, with an English-type rose garden filled with thousands upon thousands of roses making the place feel almost like a fairy tale. In the summer months, students often meet up at the Schlossgarten where during the day they can sit under the sun rays, and at night go to one of the many cultural events, concerts or open-air cinemas hosted in the park. Other outdoor activities include hiking, cycling and even swimming in the natural lake that is usually very crowded during the hot summer days.
