EISENSTADT AT A GLANCE

The capital of the Burgenland province rests at the foot of the Leitha Mountain and with more than 14,000 inhabitants ranks as the smallest state capital in Austria. Regardless of its size, Eisenstadt has a lot to offer as it was once home to the noble Hungarian family Esterházy that also built one of their castles in the city that is now one of Eisenstadt’s popular landmarks. In addition, the city has several other historical sites showcasing the traditional medieval architecture with beautiful Gothic arcades and Baroque facades. Eisenstadt is also often associated with the name of the famous composer Joseph Haydn, who spent most of his musical career as a court musician for the Esterházy family. Perhaps what makes the city so enjoyable to live and study in is the hospitality and friendly atmosphere along with the beautiful scenery spots within and outside of Eisenstadt. As it is located in the northern part of the Burgenland, the climate in Eisenstadt is rather continental. Summers here are warm and dry with average temperatures between 22 °C and -23 °C throughout the months from June to August. Winters, on the other hand, are relatively mild with temperatures staying mostly above 0 °C even in the coldest month, i.e. January. Regional trains make traveling to and from Eisenstadt to other bigger cities like Vienna easy. The local public transport is serviced by city buses which have been operating since 2016; unfortunately they do not operate on Sundays. Another common means of transportation is the city taxi that exists since 1992 and has been upgraded ever since in order to adapt to the current technological developments. As of 2018, locals can travel for only 2.50 EUR per ride with the use of a special City Taxi Card.
