Originally called “Freiburg im Breisgau”, this small university town is located in the Baden-Württemberg state in the south Germany. It is ideal for those who prefer longer days, as it is the city with the most sun hours in the country. Freiburg is surrounded by the Black Forest, green hills and wine vineyards, which undoubtedly contribute to the tourism aspect in the city. Taking a stroll through the Old Town will reveal magnificent historic buildings and traditional half-timbered houses. This place is also famous for its small water streams supplied by the Dreisam River, called Freiburger Bächle, which can be seen along the streets of the Old Town. The climate in Freiburg is influenced mainly by the flat location and surrounding mountains that prevent much of the Mediterranean air to reach the southern part of Germany. This is why summers here tend to be much hotter than within the rest of the country. Although everything is within a short walking distance, Freiburg has a very well-organized public transportation network. Buses and trams, with the latter being predominant, circulate regularly and with low fares, allowing people to travel unlimited within the city and surrounding area.

Life in Freiburg is filled with recreational and cultural activities, all of them perfect for students as they are quite inexpensive. A pleasant mixture of culture, delicious traditional and international cuisine, good weather and beautiful scenic spots creates an exciting ambiance that everyone wants to indulge in especially during summertime. Many cultural events like the Spring or wine festivals, concerts, food markets take place throughout the year even during the winter season. Students can also relax in the surrounding areas by hiking or exploring the Black Forest or dip in the Titisee lake. For a night out there are some great places throughout Freiburg for meeting with fellow students and partying until the early in the morning. Aside from clubs there are some nice cocktail bars and pubs where students can have a more relaxed evening outdoors under the night sky with a traditional brew. Sports activities are also being organized by the universities where students can compete or simply have fun.
