About 30 kilometers away from Hanover in the federal state of Lower Saxony lies one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, namely Hildesheim. With a population of over 100,000 people and three universities, the city is just the right place for students who want to live in a large city that still carries the charm of a small town. The city also attracts numerous tourists every year who come to walk the famous Route of the Roses taking people through the historical landmarks of Hildesheim. The city is located in the oceanic climate zone that features a generally temperate weather with mild temperatures. In summer, days are usually sunny but rain might occur occasionally since July and August are considered to be the wettest months. Winters are relatively cold, with temperatures ranging between 0 °C and -2 °C. Hildesheim is well-connected to other cities in the country that can be reached by road or using railway services. The closest bigger cities are Hannover, Braunschweig, and Salzgitter. Although most of the places in Hildesheim are within biking distance the local public transport network is also well-developed. Buses frequently circulate around all districts of the city. Students can also benefit from their semester tickets and use the bus services within the city for free as well as some of the Deutsche Bahn’s trains.

STUDYING IN HILDESHEIM

Hildesheim is home to three higher education institutions, namely the University of Hildesheim, the University of Applied Sciences and Art (HAWK), and the North German University of Law (HR Nord). The oldest and most attended one with about 8,000 students is the University of Hildesheim, which was established in 1946 as a Teacher Training College. Nowadays, the university offers its students a wide range of degree courses in Educational and Social Sciences, Cultural Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and many other fields. The HAWK is the second-largest university in Hildesheim, with over 6,000 students that can choose between 41 degree programs in the areas of Science and Technology, Design, Building and Preservation, Social Work and Health, and Resource Management. The university has two other campuses in the cities of Holzminden and Göttingen. The North German University of Law, founded in 2007, is the third higher education institution, training young adults into becoming judicial officers in the states of Lower-Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Bremen. International students and those coming from other German cities should not face huge challenges in finding accommodation in Hildesheim. There are several student residence halls in the city offering single rooms in flats that can be shared with three to twelve students. Rooms usually come fully furnished at an average price of 290 EUR per month with all utility bills included. Since the student residence halls are not operated by any of the universities, students will need to either apply online for a room or mention their preferences in the application form. In addition, students can also look for single rooms and shared or studio flats on the private housing market in the city.
