KIEL AT A GLANCE

One of the most important maritime cities in Germany and the capital of the Schleswig-Holstein state, Kiel lies in the northernmost part of the country. With a population of more than 245,000 citizens, this also happens to be the most populous city in this region. What makes this university town worth living in is a combination of its location by the Baltic Sea, the relaxed lifestyle and the diverse cultural life. The Hanseatic city is probably best known for its special affinity for sailing, with the most famous event around there being the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week). The festival takes place once a year and apart from the sailing regatta the comprehensive program also includes various musical performances. The oceanic climate around here is heavily influenced by the location of the city on the Baltic Sea with average temperatures throughout the year. Warm summer days are often refreshed by a gentle sea breeze spreading through the town. The public transport in Kiel is serviced only by buses equipped with modern technologies, servicing 700 bus stops around the city. Cycling is also a common way of traveling around the city. For those who wish to explore the rest of Germany, railway services operate every day traveling to bigger cities like Hamburg or Lübeck.

STUDYING IN KIEL

Christian Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU), Kiel University of Applied Sciences and Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design are currently the only three higher education institutes in the city. The oldest and most visited one with over 26,000 students is the University of Kiel. With eight faculties spread around the city, CAU offers a wide range of degree courses in the fields of Theology, Medicine, Law, Arts, Business and other. As suggested by the names the other two institutes are focusing on more specific areas covering artistic, creative and practical aspects in addition to specifically scientific ones. Each university has established relationships with higher learning institutes internationally and is very welcoming towards foreign students regardless of their backgrounds. Students with poor or no knowledge of the German language can benefit from English-language courses taught partially at Bachelor’s level or entirely at Master’s level. To make it even easier for newcomers to adapt to the new environment, help with the search for accommodation is being provided by the nonprofit student organization Studentenwerk. Students can also search for housing on the private market for a room or a shared flat with friends.

KIEL LIFESTYLE

Most of the lifestyle here is thus related to water activities like sailing, surfing, fishing or even going to one of the several beaches in Kiel. The city has also a lot to offer in cultural terms. Throughout the year many other events take place like the medieval Kieler Umschlag festival or the Duckstein beer festival. All of them are perfect occasions for all citizens to gather together and get to know each other while celebrating traditions and customs. Dance clubs, bars and pubs can be found around here with exceptional parties, live music performances and fancy cocktails. Students can also unwind with a movie night at the Kulturzentrum’s cinema or enjoy a theatrical play, ballet or opera at the Kiel Opera House. Student and cultural lives can be always combined around here since many of the venues offer good discount deals for everyone attending university here. Another tip for a relaxing getaway is a day spent around the beautiful nature surrounding Kiel or even inside of the city. The Botanical Garden for example is a perfect place for a walk in between lessons since it is located in the grounds of the CAU.
