STUDYING IN LEOBEN

Located in the heart of Europe, Leoben is a city that has much to offer, including in terms of higher education. The Montanuniversität Leoben is a unique technical university that offers to students both ideal equipment and lots of personal attention. With a little more than 4,000 students, the higher education institution is considered relatively small. The best thing about smaller universities is the close cooperation all of the students have with their lecturers. The university offers a huge range of degree courses, including Industrial Environmental Protection & Process Engineering, Materials Science, and Mineral Resources Engineering. Usually, the degree courses are taught in German as a language of instruction. However, twenty percent of the degree courses are also taught in English. When it comes to student accommodation, students try to find a balance between price and quality. In the city of Leoben, students can live either in the student halls of residence provided or find private accommodation themselves. There are both in and off-campus accommodation but in-campus is only available for full-time but not to exchange students. Living in student halls is considered the cheapest option, with prices ranging between 250 and 300 EUR per month for a room. However, places in the student dormitories are strictly limited, which is why students need to apply as early as possible. The other option prospective students have is to look for a single room in a shared flat to rent. The rent usually costs more, namely between 320 and 400 EUR per month for a single person.

LEOBEN LIFESTYLE

Leoben has a rich cultural life and the MuseumsCenter Leoben is considered the cultural heart of the city. Its main aim is to represent the city’s history and changing industries from the very beginning until the present time. There is a huge selection of changing exhibitions and schedule can be checked on the complex’s official website for more information. One of the biggest advantages Leoben has is that it is big enough for students to spend their spare time and small enough so that everything is easily reachable by foot or by bike. Walking through the old town takes not more than thirty minutes. With its amazing atmosphere and beautiful architecture, everyone will feel at home in the city. There are many possibilities for students to plan outdoor activities during their spare time. Those who appreciate the good coffee will be pleased to visit the Cafe am Schwammerlturm located on the very top of the circular city tower. This place offers both high-quality coffee and amazing, breath-taking view. Sunday mornings can taste so much better if spent there.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN LEOBEN

Despite its size, Leoben offers not only unique educational but also career opportunities to students, graduates and skilled workers as well. Many engineering students find good job offers in local companies operating in that field, such as GEODATA Ziviltechniker GmbH, or TBG Brunnthaler GmbH. Some students even choose to do their internship placement in those companies and gain important knowledge and skills. However, many students from Leoben actually decide to relocate after they are done with the university, and in most of the cases they choose to go to Vienna.
