QUIERSCHIED AT A GLANCE

Just about twelve kilometers north of the state capital of Saarbrücken lies the municipality of Quierschied. A population of 13,030 people extends across a total area of 20.22 km2. Bus lines connect Quierschied to Saarbrücken, Dudweiler and Sulzbach. There is also a direct connection to the national road network thanks to the Federal Highway 1 and Federal Highway 8. That helps visitors and locals travel around easily. The weather in the region is relatively wet, with a great rate of precipitation. The driest month is September. Even after being destroyed in wars and with the numerous following changes taken into account, Quierschied still preserves the spirit of Germany. The coal industry in the region developed with the passing of time. Nowadays locals consider it one of the most distinguishing features of the territory. The official and most spoken language there is German. The peacefulness of the small towns can be felt in Quierschied too. STUDYING IN QUIERSCHIED

When it comes to higher education, young adults can rely on EFSA Quierschied – The European College of Geriatric Care and the Saarland University of Applied Sciences to give them an opportunity to continue their education. The College of Geriatric Care offers a Bachelor’s degree course in Geriatric Care that lasts seven semesters. Its main focus is on practical knowledge and working in a real environment. That is why a training program for geriatric nurses, both male and female, is included in the education plan. The study program lasts for three years and ends with an examination. On the other hand, during the last semester students are becoming familiar with real working environment at a number of different care facilities. In order to be admitted to the course, one should have German language skills at B2 level at least. However, for foreigners with knowledge at B1 level there is a training program for registered geriatric nurses. At the Saarland University of Applied Sciences there are opportunities to study in the Department of General Public Administration or the Department of Law Enforcement. The University provides theoretical and practical courses in the fields of Economics and Finance, Law, Social or Administrative Sciences. Students usually find accommodation near campus. EFSA even takes care of the accommodation for students. It is in the same building where the college rooms are seated; it provides space for up to 150 students. On offer are double rooms with full board and maintenance costs included. The room rate is 200 EUR per month, including a worldwide telephone flat rate, as well as access to the laundry room and tea kitchens. Moreover, students can enjoy the beautiful balconies in some of the apartments.

QUIERSCHIED LIFESTYLE

From outdoor pools and sports grounds to night bars and restaurants: there is enough to do in Quierschied. Young people can play beach volleyball at the Waldparkanlage court or go to Saloon bar for a drink with friends. Many bicycle routes and different hiking trails make the region very interesting to people who enjoy outdoor sports. This type of recreation also provides a good source of inspiration, as the surrounding nature helps locals stay relaxed and motivated. The cultural and historic heritage attracts tourists to the region. Examples are the Celtic and Roman excavations and the nearby museum Völklingen Ironworks, which are of great interest to many visitors.
