The independent city of Rostock lies in the norther part of Germany right on the shores of the Baltic Sea. With over 200,000 citizens it is the largest city in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state. Although far from central part of the country, life in this quaint Hanseatic city is actually bustling with cultural and leisure activities, sandy beaches and green landscapes and, of course, as many other German cities, an amazing medieval architecture. Attracting countless tourists every year, the city’s lifestyle is quite busy and keeping up with new trends, making the overall environment here quite modern. Some of the most famous landmarks here are harbor with the Warnemünde resort and Alter Strom channel and of course the historical churches and buildings in the inner city with the typical Brick Gothic architecture for this region. Apart from the sandy beaches, in the eastern part of the city stretches the beautiful Rostock Heath forest, the perfect place for hiking, cycling or long walks while admiring the nature. The oceanic climate here is strongly influenced by the city’s close proximity to the Baltic Sea. Summers here are warm and somewhat humid with average temperatures between 19 °C and 22 °C. Winters here are also mild and not extremely cold, with temperatures dropping below 0ᵒC and rather staying stable throughout the months from December until March. Public transportation in the city is serviced by the tramway network and wide bus network. Thus, travelling within the city is very fast and efficient and all districts are reachable within short period of time. The large ferry port allows easy access to Rostock also by water from Scandinavian destinations. Direct travels to bigger cities like Berlin and Hamburg are also available due to the fast rail connections they have with Rostock.

STUDYING IN ROSTOCK

There are two higher learning institutes established in the city: the University of Rostock and the University of Music and Theater Rostock (HMT). Established in 1419 the University of Rostock ranks among some of the oldest higher learning institutes in Germany. With more than 13,000 students enrolled for the past winter semester the university is the largest one in the state, offering a broad range of degree courses. More than 150 degree courses are offered at all levels, covering the fields of Humanities, Natural Sciences and Law providing students with modern approaches in teaching and practice training. The HMT, on the other hand, focuses its more than 25 degree programs on the artistic fields of music, dance of acting. Students coming here can choose to study theater education or to specialize in playing instruments such as drums, piano, or harp. The university contributes a lot to the cultural life of the city since a lot of students often carry out both musical and theatrical performances. International students are always welcomed to study in either of the two universities. Moving to another city far away from home often comes with many responsibilities and new challenges. One of them is finding a comfortable place to live during one’s studies.
