In the northwestern part of the Baden-Wuerttemberg state lies the city of Schwetzingen with a population of over 20,000 people. Public transport within the urban area of the city is run by buses, although many citizens prefer to get around by bicycle. Schwetzingen is also very well connected to other cities in Germany, like Heidelberg that is only ten kilometers away, while Speyer and Mannheim can be reached by train.

STUDYING IN SCHWETZINGEN

In Schwetzingen there is only one higher education institute, namely the University of Law/Legal Services Schwetzingen, also known as The Schwetzingen Technical Institute and Graduate Court Registrars’s College. Founded in 1953 as an internal institute of technology, the university is nowadays attended by some 400 students. Currently the university offers a three-year degree Bachelor’s course that concludes with a “Diplom Rechtspflegerin (FH)” or a “Diplom-Rechtspfleger (FH)” degree. Since 2016 the university has included another Bachelor’s degree program called ‘’Bailiff’’ (LL.B.). One of the main purposes of the university is to prepare its students for their professional development through a combination of theory and practice. This is why, in 2011, the university reorganized its judicial training program and changed its content. Students will now have 24 months of specialized studies and 12 months of study practice with different legal authorities. Furthermore, the education received here will entitle graduates to practice their respective profession in the federal states of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland.

Often overlooked due to its size, Schwetzingen is actually a quite attractive place to live and study in. Newcomers who are keen on discovering more about the past of the city and its role in medieval Germany can walk down the Historical Path, which tells the story of key historical events, important people and archeological findings. Schwetzingen is also a town of culture where music and art still play an important role. All students, regardless of their background, are entitled to work during their lecture period for no more than 15 to 20 hours per week. Additional requirements such as a working permit might apply for some international students.
