Traditional German vegetarian food

What are some good places in Berlin where I can try out traditional German dishes that are vegetarian? I am also open to cooking something myself as long as it is German. Can you recommend any recipes?

I am also a vegetarian but I prefer to cook at home as I don’t really have the time to go out. So far I am a master in making spätzle :D It is like the German equivalent of mac and cheese and it is quite easy to make. Here is a recipe you can try: Ingredients: 4 eggs/ 2/3 cup milk/ 2 tsp salt and 2 cups of flour. You can also add cream or yogurt if you like. How to make: You put all ingredients into a bowl and mix them together. If you need to adjust the texture you can ask more flour or milk depending on the thickness of the batter. It should not have lumps. Then you boil some water and pour the batter for no more than two-three minutes . You can buy a special spätzle tool to form the pasta or use a spoon with holes in it. I recommend buying the tool. When its ready you can add butter, spices, cheese or whatever you like to spätzle. I hope you like it.

There is one place I have visited three or four times and the food and atmosphere are always very nice. It is called Ataya Café. Very cosy inside decorated in sort of a hippie style. The meals are huge and always with fresh products. They have a brunch buffet so you can eat whatever you want. If you wanna go there during weekends you might need to make a reservation in advance because I remember it was full when we went. Now with Corona it might not be the same but you can still call them.

I love eating at Vincent Vegan. Very nice place with friendly staff, great atmosphere and delicious vegan burgers. The prices are also descent around 10 EUR for a burger, which I think is pretty good.

I make at home what is called Knödel but the vegetarian alternative with potatoes… basically potato dumplings. Here is my recipe: I use around 4 or 5 medium sized potatoes, one parsnip, garlic, about 80-100 g of flour, 80 g potato starch, one large egg and parsley. These are the ingredients for the dumplings. To make them you need to boil the potatoes and peel them when they are ready. In the meantime I prepare the parsnip that I cook for about 15 minutes in simmering water, not boiling. Just to make it tender. When everything is ready you mix the potatoes and parnishp and mash them together or you can also grate them. Add the rest of the ingreditens into to mixture and with your hands need to make smooth dough and form it into medium-sized balls. To cook them you need to put them in boiling water for about 15-20 minutes. You can garnish them with gravy, red cabbage, spinach or other vegetables of your choice.
