What is international student's life like in Germany?

Hey guys! I recently came to Bamberg for my studies at the University of Bamberg. I come from Ukraine and don’t speak German very well and I am a little bit worry that I will have problems adapting here. How is life in Germany for international students? Will I be able to make friends here especially when studying in a smaller city. Is any of you guys based in Bamberg and can you give me some suggestions what can I do in my free time? Thank you in advance!

Germany is quite popular among international students so you shouldn’t have any problems finding friends even such coming from Ukraine. I am sure there is a group or a society of Ukrainians in your university, you just have to ask at the international’s office.

I come from London and was quite stressed with my first arrival in Ilmenau. However, slowly with time I found out that I actually like life here much better than the one in London. If you like a calmer place that will allow you to focus on your studies but at the same time provide you with enough activities in your free time then I think you will be alright in Bamberg. Besides Bamberg is quite close to other bigger cities so you can explore the region as well if you get bored.

You will have no problem with the language, Joana. People in Germany are very nice and welcoming. Your university should offer language courses in case you need some help. I am from Russia and I found many friends in my first year in Germany throughout Facebook groups so you should check there to see what you can find. I think this group can be helpful, have a look https://www.facebook.com/groups/ukinim/permalink/2645756715469033/

I am currently in my second year at uni Bamberg and I must tell you living in Bamberg is like fairy tale. This is considered as a student town so you will for sure find a lot of friends even in the first weeks of uni. As far as the activities that you can do in your free time there are plenty of them actually. Starting with the clubs at uni that you can sign up for you can do sports, you can engage in acting, dancing, singing, almost anything you think of. For the city itself, as you know it is located on the river so in summer you have many options for relaxing or studying outdoors. There also bars and restaurants that you can find on a street called Sandstrasse. For the language I had problems too because I was scared of speaking it, even though I studies it at school back in France. But you have to , if you want to get along with others and understand them you just need to start talking even with mistakes. You will see how fast you will learn it, and when you go back home you might even forget how to say some words in Ukrainian :D

I also study in Bamberg and come from Italy. It is my third year and I love it here. I agree with Lea there are plenty of activities here so do not get fooled by the size of the city it is actually very bubbly. My favourite thing about Bamberg is nature throughout the city and in the surrounding areas. I love calm places so I often go to the Hainpark, this is the largest park here. You might also like the Rosengarten , it has very beautiful flowers. If you like activities like hiking the surroundings here are perfect for this. You might not know it yet but Bamberg is situated on seven hills so you will have many opportunities of outdoor activities in the nature like camping, biking, hiking…

You should contact the International Office at the uni, they have many programs that can help you find new friends and people from Ukraine as well. If you find a part-time job you will also have high chances of meeting more people and learn the language faster. This is what I did in my first year but it also depends on what kind of person you are… if you are outgoing then you wont have a problem but if you like staying at home and not very talkative I think you might struggle in the beginning until you get used to life here ;)
