Should I stay on campus or rent a flat in town?

Veröffentlicht von:  ZuzanaD

Hello! I’m a student from Slovakia moving to study in Germany. I will be studying in Goethe Universität Frankfurt and I have a question: where is it best to live? I saw on the university website that there are student dormitories, but I don’t know if it’s good to live there? The other option is renting a flat, but I can’t do it alone and I don’t know anyone in Frankfurt yet. What would you do?

Hey, Zuzana! I study in Frankfurt as well. I can tell you about my experience with accommodation. I applied at the student dormitories with the Studentenwerk because that’s the cheapest alternative, but I wasn’t accepted. I think the number of dormitories is limited, so they aren’t enough for everyone. However, again with Studentenwerk I was able to find a private apartment to rent with 2 friends. It was an easy process, but I know it’s not like that for everyone. So, my recommendation is to try the student dormitories first and if that doesn’t work, go for a room in a shared apartment. It’s also a great way to meet new people studying in Frankfurt!

I think you should just check out offers on local websites and stuff to see and compare the prices.

As Sonja said, the best option is to look with the Studentenwerk organization and see if they accept you. If not, move on from there and try shared apartments, because they are definitely cheaper than renting alone. Good luck!

My advice is also to start looking a few months in advance because sometimes it takes a lot of time. But even If you don’t find exactly what you look for, there are definitely good options. Just dont give up!!
