Görlitz is a city in the Upper Lusatia region in the federal state of Saxony, eastern Germany. It is the easternmost city in Germany, situated on the border with Poland, and on the banks of the Luastian Neisse River which separates the two countries. Görlitz is known for its preserved historic architecture which was almost unaffected by World War II. Together with the surrounding districts, Görlitz has over 4,000 restored historical monuments, which makes the area the largest monument area in Germany. This has made the city a popular filming location, which is why locals jokingly refer to it as “Görliwood”. The city of Görlitz has a population of over 55,000 people. The official language is German, but the local “oberlausitzisch” dialect is very distinctive and interesting. The climate in Görlitz is considered moderate to cold, with an average annual temperature of 8.3 °C. There are no significant amounts of rainfall. Görlitz is well-connected to the rest of the region, the whole of Germany, and Poland. Trains run daily through the Görlitz train station, which is a junction between a few railway lines. Görlitz is also easily accessible by car and bus. Within the city, public bus lines and two tram lines operate on a daily basis. However, cycling is a popular transport option among students as well. On the other side of the border lies the Polish city Zgorzelec. Until 1945, Zgorzelec was part of Görlitz, and today the two cities are connected by pedestrian and road bridges.

STUDYING IN GÖRLITZ

Established in 1992, the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz is a public higher education institution with locations in both Zittau and Görlitz. The university currently accommodates over 3,000 students (500 of which are foreigners from 32 different nations) who are pursuing degrees in one of 32 programs. The University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz offers diploma, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Automation and Mechatronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Healthcare Management, Economics, International Tourism Management, Business Management and many more. The university is split into six faculties: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, the Faculty of Managerial and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering. All courses are taught in German, but additional foreign languages are offered to those who wish to broaden their skills. Foreign students are welcomed at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz and are provided with special consultation and preparation for higher education in Germany. The university also offers some unique diploma programs, exchange programs and degrees in cooperation with other German and international universities. The organization Studentenwerk Dresden operates a number of student dormitories located in Zittau and Görlitz. There are three facilities in Görlitz where students can live - Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Görlitz, Gästehaus Klingewalde, and Vogtshof (Gottfried-Kiesow-Platz 2). Monthly rent ranges between 180 and 200 EUR for single rooms in shared apartments. Private renting offers are also published in the local newspapers and websites.

GÖRLITZ LIFESTYLE

Görlitz is a city of beautiful architectural heritage from different historical periods – late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The old town is one of the best-preserved in Central Europe. Approximately 4,000 monuments are located in Görlitz, and their preservation is a top priority for the city. They are some of the biggest tourist attractions in the whole region. Cultural life in Görlitz is busy. You can enjoy new and old films and plays in the local theater and Filmpalast Görlitz cinema. A number of museums located in the city display exhibits on history, art and nature.
