Schweinfurt is a city in the administrative district of Lower Franconia, Upper Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the right bank of the Main river and on the northeastern edge of the Schweinfurt basin. The city is in relatively close proximity to Frankfurt am Main, Nuremberg, Würzburg and Bad Kissingen, which makes its location very convenient. Public transport is well-established, with a few railway stations, long-distance and regional bus lines and a number of roads and federal highways running through the city. Schweinfurt is located between Frankfurt Airport (118 km west) and Nuremberg Airport (85 km southeast). Public transport within Schweinfurt is also very convenient. Buses run on a daily schedule. Schweinfurt prides itself on being the city with the densest network of public transport stops among all German cities. In addition, there is a network of cycling paths and trails. The city of Schweinfurt has a population of approximately 55,000 people. The official language is German, but the Lower Franconian dialect can be heard. The climate in the Schweinfurt area is moderate to cold with an average annual temperature of 8.9 °C. What is typical, however, is the relatively low precipitation. Established in 1971, the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is a public higher education institution with two locations – Würzburg and Schweinfurt. In total, the University offers 49 Bachelor and 19 Master degree programs, seven of which are taught entirely in English. The University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is the only university of its kind in Bavaria with a focus on English-taught programs, and has a goal of introducing even more. With a total of 9,276 students attending in 2018/2019, the University is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Bavaria. The location in Schweinfurt is divided into four departments and the programs offered include “Electrical Engineering and Information Technology”, “Mechanical Engineering”, “Logistics”, “Product and System Development”, “Business and Engineering” and more. Innovation, digitalization and a practice-oriented approach are among the top priorities of the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. All students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge through internships and work placements, or even benefit from a dual study program, where more work experience is provided. Also, they have the chance to carry out research, which is of high importance for developing professional skills as well. The organization Studentenwerk Würzburg provides two student dormitories in Schweinfurt, located in close proximity to the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. Altogether, there are more than 200 single and shared student flats at very reasonable prices. Monthly rent ranges between 260 and 350 EUR, and a deposit must be paid prior to moving in.
