Weilheim is a town in the Waldshut district in the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, southwestern Germany. It is situated on the southern edge of Hotzenwald, a region in the Black Forest, and almost on the border with Switzerland. Weilheim prides itself on its beautiful landscape, warm atmosphere and friendly community. The nature in the region provides wonderful views of the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley. However, the best way for students to get around town is by bicycle. Weilheim is known for its timber processing and wooden products production. The processors in town design all kinds of wooden goods that are used in all of Germany. A beautiful rose garden with an assortment of flowers is located in the Weilheim district Nöggenschwiel. There the Nöggenschwieler Rose Days are celebrated annually.

STUDYING IN WEILHEIM

Established in 1988, the Gustav Siewerth Academy is a higher education institution seated in Weilheim-Bierbronnen. In 2012/13 it became the smallest state-recognized institution of higher education in the country with just 13 students. The Gustav Siewerth Academy offers degree programs in Philosophy, Sociology and Family Studies with majors in Catholic theology and pedagogy and minor subjects in philosophy of science and journalism, both at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. The Academy also provides a “General Studies” course which combines concepts from the other programs on an interdisciplinary basis. Generally, courses at Gustav Siewerth Academy are based on Catholic beliefs and aim to explore a range of topics, including philosophical problems and theological theories. The Academy also offers an annual Theological Summer Course. Because Gustav Siewerth Academy is a private institution, students are required to pay tuition fees. Study periods and entry dates can vary depending on personal convenience, but the fees are usually 900 EUR per semester or 300 EUR per month. A corresponding certificate is used to certify students’ attendance. All subjects at the Academy are taught in German. Gustav Siewerth Academy does not provide on-campus accommodation, but cheap options can be found either in the town of Weilheim or in the neighboring villages, which are in close proximity to the institution.

WEILHEIM LIFESTYLE

Weilheim is a charming little town on the southern edge of the Black Forest that has a beautiful landscape and gorgeous nature. It may not have the busiest lifestyle, but Weilheim is perfect for those who seek peace and serenity. Weilheim has picturesque views of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding rose gardens and parks. It is almost on the border with Switzerland, so a day trip to Basel is a great opportunity. In addition to the wonderful nature, Weilheim provides its residents and visitors with a few sights of historic significance, such as the beer brewery Waldhaus. There are a few guesthouses, restaurants, cafés and bars in town which offer delicious local food. The most popular places to eat and drink are La Cantinetta – Cigar Lounge, Clubhouse SV Waldhaus, Gret-Stube – Day coffee and Vesperstube, and of course, the brewery. There is also a barbecue hut that is available from April to October. Some of the best things to do in Weilheim are hiking and cycling in the beautiful nature. The southern Black Forest is widely known as one of the most beautiful biking areas in Germany. There are pathways in Weilheim, and the surrounding area is suitable for mountain biking, road biking and leisure cycling. Regular events are also held in the town of Weilheim – concerts, party nights, food festivals and the annual Oktoberfest are just a few examples.
