Zittau is a large district town in the district of Görlitz in the most southeastern part of the federal state of Saxony, Eastern Germany. Zittau lies in the border triangle of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. The city of Zittau is located at the Zittau Basin and at the foot of the Zittau Mountains. The basin landscape extends to the valley of the Lusatian Neisse river, which forms the border with Poland. The small Mandau river, which is a tributary to the Lusatian Neisse, flows through the city. The town of Zittau has a population of just over 25,000 people. The official language is German, but naturally, it is not unusual to hear Polish or Czech as well, due to the location on the border. The climate in Zittau is moderate, with an average annual temperature of 8.2 °C and lower than average annual rainfall. Zittau is well-connected to the rest of Germany, as well as the neighboring countries. Several German railways end in Zittau and trains run on a daily schedule. The town is also easily accessible via highway and motorway. Within Zittau, the most convenient way to travel is by bicycle. Zittau is known for its beautiful architecture, typical for the region, historic monuments, border location and the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz.

STUDYING IN ZITTAU
Founded in 1992, the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz is a public higher education institution with locations in both Zittau and Görlitz. The seat of the University is located in ZIttau. The University currently accommodates over 3,000 students (500 of which are foreigners from 32 different nations) pursuing degrees in a total of 32 programs. Students at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz can choose from diploma, Bachelor and Master degree programs in Automation and Mechatronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Healthcare Management, Economics, International Tourism Management, Business Management and many more. The University is split into six faculties: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, the Faculty of Managerial and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering. All degree courses are taught in German, but classes in foreign languages are offered as well. Foreign students are welcomed at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz and are provided with special consultation and preparation for higher education in Germany. The University also provides unique diploma programs, exchange programs and degrees in cooperation with other German and international universities. The organization Studentenwerk Dresden operates a number of student dormitories located in Zittau and Görlitz. Students can choose from a variety of residences in Zittau that offer single rooms in shared apartments and separate apartments at reasonable prices. Monthly rent ranges from 200 to 300 EUR. Private renting offers are also published in the local newspapers and on websites.

The town of Zittau, though not big in size, has a lot to offer. A number of historic buildings and monuments attract visitors every year. Some of the most fascinating structures include the Salt house on the Neustadt, the "Clock Island", the Historic water tower, the Stapling with Renaissance gable, and the City Bath on the city ring. In addition, tourists and locals can enjoy the theaters, cinemas, museums and libraries in town, where the local culture can be experienced. Various events take place in Zittau every year – the Zittau city festival, the Neisse Film Festival, Zittau music night, the Feast at the border triangle, spring and autumn food markets, Christmas markets and many more. It is safe to say that you will not be bored in Zittau! The local cuisine includes a mix of German, Polish and Czech dishes. Restaurants in town serve both traditional and international food. Nightlife in Zittau is not the busiest, but there are still bars and nightclubs which students can enjoy. The most popular places include "Vinyl" Kneipe Zittau, Moccabar, the Irish Pub, Alte Weberei Zittau, and Jam Dance Base. The nature in the area provides plenty of opportunities for walks, hikes, cycling, picnics and other outdoor activities. Students can also benefit from Zittau’s location and go on day trips to Poland and the Czech Republic, where they can experience different cultures.
