Emden is an independent German city in the federal state of Lower Saxony. The city's total area equals 112.33 km2, with more than 50,000 people living, working and studying there. The official language spoken in the city of Emden is German. The city has an oceanic climate which is characterized by hot summers and relatively cold winters. During December, January and February, temperatures are very low, between -2 and 0 °C. July and August are the warmest months when temperatures go up to 23 – 25 °C. Emden is a great place for young people. Not only can it offer many different types of sports students can try; it also has an amazing and quiet atmosphere and of course, provides an excellent level of higher education. The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer, founded in 1973, is a small but good educational institution that aims at providing students with a practice-oriented education and prepares them properly for their future career life. As the name indicates, the higher education institution has campuses in both Emden and Leer. However, the university’s headquarter is situated in Emden. The university is currently home to almost 5,000 students from all around the world. The local higher education institution provides a wide range of degree courses students can choose from, including Engineering Physics, Industrial Informatics, Management Consulting, and many others. Even though the main language of instruction is German, there are still courses that are entirely taught in English. Student accommodation is another important aspect of student life that needs to be considered prior to a student’s arrival. In the city of Emden, there are several student halls of residence with fully furnished single rooms for local students. In fact, living in a student dormitory is considered the cheapest and most convenient type of student accommodation. It is arranged by an independent organization, known among students as Studentenwerk. The university is not responsible for providing accommodation to students.
