Aalen is a German city located in the eastern part of the Baden-Württemberg state. It is the largest town in the Ostwürttemberg region, with a population of over 65,000 people. Once known as a Free Imperial city, Aalen is now popular for its ancient roman flair, due to the many traces left by the Roman occupants which can still be seen in the city. Located between the Swabian Alb and the Swabian-Franconian Forest, the city enjoys a marvelous surrounding region with beautiful landscapes ideal for all sorts of outdoor activities. Throughout the city one can admire the ancient history through the half-timbered buildings, medieval castle and Roman ruins. One of the most popular landmarks of the city are the limes thermal baths designed in an ancient Roman style. Due to its geographical location the climate in Aalen is predominantly characterized by rainy days, since the annual precipitation exceeds the average for Germany. Summers here are nice and warm with temperatures reaching 23-25°C, whereas winters are windy and cold with temperatures dropping as low as -5°C. Aalen is well located being within a very close proximity to two bigger cities, namely Stuttgart and Ulm. Travels to and from the city can be done both by train or a car. The local public transport comprises of a bus system with a broad network allowing locals to reach any point of the city. In addition, cycling is also a popular way of getting around. Aalen is quite a cosmopolitan city considering the fact that it is home to a large international community comprised of people from more than 100 different nationalities.

STUDYING IN AALEN

The city is also home to the public Aalen University founded in 1962. With around 5,700 students it is one of the largest universities of applied sciences within the state of Baden-Württemberg. An important aspect about this particular university is its way of tailoring study courses to meet not only the expectations of prospective students but also the career requirements and trends within the region. With its five faculties, Aalen UAS offers over 50 different Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs in fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Bioanalytical Chemistry, Business Science and other. What is more, here students can find courses in Optical Engineering that are very rare throughout the other universities in Germany. Furthermore, the university is in partnership with around 100 universities and companies worldwide, allowing students to benefit from a wide range of options for internships and placements throughout their studies. Students in Aalen can find accommodation in student halls or rent a shared flat. Single rooms and shared flats in student halls are modern and well equipped. The price ranges anywhere between 150 and 360 EUR including bills and depends on the type of the room or flat. Most of the apartments include a kitchenette and a separate bathroom, while rooms are fully furnished and equipped with a TV, Wi-Fi and telephone connections. All of the accommodations are located within a close proximity of the university allowing students to easily walk or cycle to their campus. Alternatively, students can also seek for renting a room or a shared flat throughout the city on the private housing market. However, this option might be more expensive since some flats might come unfurnished.

AALEN LIFESTYLE

Aalen is not only an ideal place for studying but also for living as it boasts a vibrant atmosphere with plenty of cultural and recreational activities. As mentioned earlier, one of the city’s most prominent landmarks are the thermal baths that include not only several different indoor and outdoor mineral pools but also saunas, steam baths and solariums. Those who love to stay active while admiring nature can easily go hiking or biking through the beautiful Swabian landscape in their free time. Another interesting attraction in the city would be the Tiefer Stollen, a former mine known for its benefits for one’s health. In summer students can travel to the nearby city of Rainau where they can enjoy the sunrays at the local beach, go windsurfing or rock-climbing. The fun most certainly does not end with the abovementioned outdoor activities, since Aalen has also a fantastic cultural scene filled with fun events like festivals, concerts, theatrical plays, exhibitions, and many more. In addition, Aalen has a variety of clubs and bars where theme parties are organized frequently, offering students the opportunity to have fun at weekends.
