The small municipality of Altenholz is situated very close to the Kiel Canal in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The town’s total area amounts to 19 km2, and there are almost 10,000 people who work, study or live in Altenholz. Even though German is the official language there, the young part of the city’s inhabitants can speak English as well. Typically for this part of the country, the climate in Altenholz is warm and temperate with average temperatures around 10 °C. The winter there is rather cold but summer feels very nice with average temperatures reaching 21 °C in July and August. STUDYING IN ALTENHOLZ

Despite its size, Altenholz is an ideal study destination because of the excellent level of higher education the city offers. The University of Applied Sciences for Administration and Services in Schleswig-Holstein is headquartered in Altenholz and has another campus in Reinfeld. The University was founded in 1975, and today it is home to about 1,400 students. The campus in Altenholz offers three different degree courses, including “General Administration”, “Police Education and Training”, as well as “Tax Administration”. The main language of instruction at the higher education institute is German, therefore all applicants should provide proof of their level of knowledge in the German language. When it comes to student accommodation, students often look for a balance between quality and price. In the city of Altenholz, there are private student dormitories located very close to the campus which can accommodate approximately 400 students. What students need to be aware of is that the availability runs strictly on a first-come-first-serve basis, i.e. the earlier one applies, the better. Prospective students can expect to pay between 180 and 220 EUR for a room per month there. Renting a room in a shared flat, or a whole studio outside the student hall can be a little more expensive. A single room in a shared flat close to the city center comes at a price of 280 to 360 EUR per month. However, the price also depends on where the flat is located and if it is furnished.

Altenholz is a small place but most of students find this an advantage because that means they will not have to pay a huge amount of money for rent every month, and therefore will be able to afford eating out relatively often. Additionally, it is way easier to build relationships with people in smaller places than in metropolitan cities such as Berlin or Munich, for instance. At some point, everyone knows each other. Situated away from the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan city, the slower but more relaxed pace of small towns can be the right place for students who prefer to concentrate on their studies. Even so, there are plenty of places for students to eat and treat themselves in the city when they are not attending lectures or tutorials. A very famous spot in Altenholz where both locals and foreigners enjoy going to is the Greek restaurant Hellas. It is a very modern and big restaurant which is perfect for any kind of celebrations, such as birthdays. The portions are really big, the atmosphere is pretty amazing, and it is not pricey at all. However, it is always full during weekends, so in case one wants to check it out, a reservation might be needed. Another place people love to go to on Friday evenings is the Schleusen-Garten located in the city center. There, the best craft beer in town is offered, in addition to a big selection of wine and delicious meals, of course. From vegetarian dishes to BBQ, there is something for every taste. Altenholz ist ein kleiner Ort, aber die meisten Studierenden empfinden dies als einen Vorteil, denn das bedeutet, dass sie monatlich keinen allzu großen Betrag für die Miete bezahlen müssen und sich daher relativ oft ein Essen auswärts leisten können. Außerdem ist es an kleineren Orten viel einfacher, neue Kontakte zu Menschen aufzubauen als in Metropolen wie Berlin oder München. Irgendwann kennt sich hier jeder. Abseits vom Trubel einer Großstadt gelegen, kann das langsamere, aber entspanntere Tempo der Kleinstädte die optimalen Bedingungen für Studierende bieten, die sich in erster Linie auf ihr Studium konzentrieren möchten. Dennoch gibt es in der Stadt viele Möglichkeiten, essen zu gehen und sich zu verwöhnen, wenn man gerade nicht an Vorlesungen oder Tutorien teilnimmt. Ein sehr beliebter Ort in Altenholz, zu dem Einheimische und Besucher gerne gehen, ist das griechische Restaurant Hellas. Es ist ein sehr modernes und großes Restaurant, das sich perfekt für jede Art von Feierlichkeiten wie Geburtstagen eignet. Die Portionen sind wirklich groß, die Atmosphäre ist ganz besonders und trotzdem ist es überhaupt nicht teuer. Am Wochenende ist es jedoch immer voll, so dass, falls man es ausprobieren möchte, eine Reservierung erforderlich sein könnte. Ein weiterer Ort, den man hier am Freitagabend gerne aufsucht, ist der Schleusen-Garten in der Innenstadt. Dort wird das beste Craft-Bier der Stadt angeboten, neben einer großen Auswahl an Weinen und selbstverständlich auch köstlichen Gerichten. Von vegetarischen Gerichten bis hin zum Grillteller ist hier für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei.
