BAMBERG AT A GLANCE

Located in Upper Franconia and spread across seven hills just like Rome, Bamberg is a city with an original character and historical atmosphere concentrated in the Old Town center of the city. With its outstanding architecture of medieval and baroque style the city became a UNESCO world heritage center in 1993. Because of its layout Bamberg is often referred to as ‘’Franconian Rome’’ with the sole difference that here each hill is crowned by a magnificent church. Traveling within Bamberg is extremely easy by foot or with a bicycle as most of the distances in the city are quite short. Public transport is also available and relies entirely on buses that run also up until midnight. The climate in Bamberg is rather warm and temperate, there is however quite a significant rainfall throughout the year. People living in Bamberg can enjoy nice sunny summer days but in winter the temperatures drop and it might get cold but not freezing. The demographics here are not as diverse as in other bigger cities around Germany, since only over 10,000 people are from outside of the country. However, this is not an obstacle for students to still come and study in Bamberg because of the magical atmosphere. The official language here is German, and this is why it is important for international students to have at least basic knowledge of the language as they will need to use it in their everyday life.

STUDYING IN BAMBERG

There is one higher learning institute established in Bamberg, namely the University of Bamberg, with four faculties and more than 13,000 students enrolled (as of 2018). International students coming here for their studies will have the chance to choose from several programs taught in English, or they can also choose to come to Bamberg as part of an exchange program. This particular university specializes in courses within the fields of Humanities, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences and Economics and Applied Computer Science; however students can choose from a list of other courses, too. Bamberg is a fairly small city and the demand for private accommodations has increased in recent years due to the fact that there are more and more students coming to live here. This is why it is recommendable that if students cannot find rooms in dormitories, they should start looking for alternatives as early as possible prior to arriving in the city. Prices for single rooms or shared flats vary between 228 and 363 EUR depending on the type of the accommodation and the location of the dormitory. Alternatives for flats and studios can be also found on the private housing market for those who do not manage to secure a place in a student residence hall.

BAMBERG LIFESTYLE

Bamberg is a very quiet and romantic city, which contributes to the friendly atmosphere amongst students and helps new arrivals adapt easily and faster to the new environment. University life can be still enjoyed here through various activities around the city that help with making new acquaintances and distract from the heavy studying. At night students can enjoy a drink or a proper night out at some of Bamberg’s clubs and bars. The city is also home of many breweries – in fact it has the most breweries per square kilometer in Germany. With a range and different quality beers, people can try more than 400 types of beer in the region of Bamberg. During summer a lot of people go to the Hainbadestelle where they take a dip in the Regnitz river or walk around the Hainpark. Sports fans on the other side can also enjoy a basketball game watching Bamberg’s Basketball team in the Brose Arena. When it comes to food there is a tremendous selection of restaurants offering not only traditional but also many internationals cuisines. Most of Bamberg’s traditional dishes are made out of pork and potatoes some of which cooked with local beer that gives a specific flavor to the dish.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN BAMBERG

The most developed industries in Bamberg include manufacturing of electronical equipment, textiles and clothing, and food products. Because of the many breweries around the city, the brewing market itself is also quite extensive. The professional qualifications obtained at University of Bamberg allow students to participate in internships that will further develop their skills. Internship programs or other similar forms of employment might be difficult to find within Bamberg, however there are multiple companies in wider Bavaria or within the Franconian region. Students who wish to participate in such programs while they are studying must register for a work permit if they wish to work more than 120 days per year or 240 half days annually. This of course applies only for those who are citizens of countries that are outside of the EU, for anyone else there are no working restrictions. Students who wish to earn some money on the side and fund their studies or support themselves during their studies can do so with the same rules applying. They can do so for up to 15 hours per week during lecture periods, and must obtain a working permit if one is required and they wish to work more than this during breaks. Such jobs are often advertised within the campus or on the university’s website. Job offers can be also looked up through the “Career” section on universitaet.com.
