Brandenburg an der Havel is home to two higher education institutions. The older and larger one is the Technical University of Brandenburg (THB), a public university established in 1992 that currently has over 2,500 students. The second higher education institution is the Medical University of Brandenburg Theodor Fontane (MHB), a privately owned university founded in 2014 with some 400 students. The THB carries a good regional and international reputation due to its high-quality teaching and research. Its main focus is on studies in the fields of Computer Science, Media, Technology and Business, offering 11 Bachelor degree courses and 10 Master degree courses across three faculties. As suggested by the name of the university, the MHB focuses on Medicine and Psychology. The practice-oriented and science-based educational model aims to educate students to become excellent physicians or psychologists. Students coming to Brandenburg an der Havel for the first time will need to find a proper accommodation that is comfortable and inexpensive at the same time. The Technical University of Brandenburg makes every effort to provide students with a decent accommodation in one of their student residence halls.
