STUDYING IN CLAUSTHAL-ZELLERFELD

Despite its size, the city of Clausthal-Zellerfeld offers an excellent level of higher education. The Clausthal University of Technology (TU Clausthal), founded in 1968, is home to almost 5,000 students. Every year, hundreds of exchange students come to spend a semester at the local university. The higher education institution offers many different degree programs at Bachelor’s, Master’s and even doctoral level. From Business Administration, through Chemistry and Physics, to Computer Science, there is something for almost everyone. German is the official language of instruction at the higher education institution. However, there are numerous degree courses taught in English for international students. After deciding what degree course to study, prospective students have to look for suitable student accommodation in the city. In Clausthal-Zellerfeld, students can choose between living in the student hall of residence, also called student dormitory, and going for private accommodation by finding a room to rent in a shared flat. The cheapest option is, however, living in a student hall. The rooms are located right on campus so attending lectures or going to the university library takes only a few minutes. Students may expect to pay between 180 and 250 EUR per month for a room, including utility bills. All prospective students have to be aware that the allocation of rooms in the dormitories in Germany is carried out on the first-come-first-serve basis, meaning that the earlier one applies, the better. Renting a room or a studio outside of the student halls, however, can be a little more expensive. A single room in a shared flat close to the city center comes at a price of 300 to 390 EUR per month, while studios and one-bedroom flats cost around 400 to 500 EUR.

No matter if one is just a casual biker or experienced mountain biker, there is a great extensive system of bike routes both in the city and in the surrounding area that everyone will enjoy. Most of the bookshops in town can provide students with some useful bike touring maps of the area.
