Coburg is a small and beautiful city in Germany that lies on the Itz river and is part of the federal state of Bavaria. Coburg’s total area equals 48.30 km2, with more than 40,000 people living, studying and working in the city. Approximately fifteen percent of the inhabitants of Coburg are actually foreigners from all around Europe. German is the official language in the city. The climate in Coburg is warm and temperate. During the summer it feels really nice, even during the night, but in the winter it is cold with a significant amount of rainfall. From December through February, temperatures usually are between 1 and 5 °C in Coburg. The daily temperatures during July and August, which are considered the hottest months of the year, can go up to 26 – 27 °C. Coburg is not a big town and it is very easy to go everywhere within the city on foot or by bike. However, it still has a good and very reliable public transportation network. There are nine bus lines available for the city and another eleven for the surrounding area of Coburg. Of course, there is a railway, too. From the Coburg main train station, inhabitants can easily travel within the whole country of Germany and explore different cities and regions. The amazing Leipzig is based only hour and a half away from Coburg by train and can be the ideal destination for a weekend getaway.

Coburg really is an ideal choice for those who would love to live in the heart of Europe while receiving an excellent level of higher education. Founded in 1971, the Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts is a higher education institution that provides students with a practice-oriented education. Currently, the university is home to nearly 6,000 students coming from fifty different countries. In fact, around thirteen percent of all enrolled students are foreigners. Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts offers a wide spectrum of degree courses prospective students can choose from, including Business Administration, Engineering Physics, Industrial Management, and many others. The main language of instruction at the higher education institution is German. However, the university is doing its best to make international students feel comfortable there and therefore numerous degree courses, both Bachelor’s and Master’s, are taught in English, too. When it comes to student accommodation, prospective students coming to Coburg can either apply for the student halls of residence or look for private accommodation themselves instead. There are several student houses located in the city of Coburg and they all provide different type of rooms. Living in a student dormitory is considered always a cheaper option compared to living in a private accommodation in the city. Usually, a student can expect to pay between 130 and 220 EUR per month for a room in Coburg. However, places in the dormitories are strictly limited, meaning that all those students who want to get a room there will need to apply as early as possible through the university website. Private accommodation most of the time means two or more students sharing a big flat, with each one of them having his or her own room. In Coburg, a single room in such shared flat comes at the price of 250 to 300 EUR depending on where the apartment is located.

A great example is the world’s largest samba fest, outside Brazil of course, which the city of Coburg hosts every single year and it is something like a tradition for the city. This is, in fact, the reason why Coburg is often called “Samba City”. Tourists from all around Europe come to Coburg to enjoy the festival, which usually happens at the end of July every year. Moreover, castle aficionados will be happy to know that there is an amazingly beautiful castle situated in Coburg with a neo-gothic exterior and baroque-style interior – the Schloss Ehrenburg. Right next to it, there is a beautiful park where people can take a walk after a tour of the castle. Moreover, the city offers a great atmosphere, especially in the city center. There, students will find many cozy and good coffee shops, pubs and bars where they can meet in the evening.
