Cottbus has many nicknames defining its diverse characteristics that combined together create a splendid place to live and study in. The city is known for its beautiful nature that can be admired in its many parks, gardens and a forest, as well as its intriguing historic sites and, since recently, its university reputation. Located at the river Spree between Berlin and Dresden and easy to reach, the green city is a preferable destination of tourists and students. Summers here are warm and sunny with temperatures rising up to 25°C especially in July, which is also the driest month during the year. Winters on the other hand can be cold and snowy with the coldest months being January and February. The population here is somewhat diverse as the university in Cottbus attracts more and more students each year, thus developing a more pronounced multicultural society where not only English is spoken but other international languages as well. STUDYING IN COTTBUS

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is the only higher education institute in Cottbus but has a major contribution to the culture and the economy of the city. As suggested by the name, this university is mostly focused on studies in the technical and scientific fields, however it also offers courses in health pedagogy, business administration and architecture. Furthermore, this is the only university in Germany that has implemented a unique teaching concept with courses leading to either a university or university of applied sciences degree or to a dual education degree that combines academic with vocational training. Internationalization is one of the key priorities of BTU and therefore the university is not only welcoming foreign students from all over the world but has also engaged in different university alliances. Student life can be very easy in Cottbus as the city is very affordable to live in compared to other cities in Germany. Finding an accommodation is not a challenge for students since the prices for a room in a student residence can cost as little as 180 EUR per month. Dormitories here as in the rest of the country are operated either through the student organization Studentenwerk or by private providers. Either way students should search and apply online prior to their arrival in Cottbus in order to secure themselves a place. Most of them are furnished and the final price includes all bills except for radio and internet fees. Students can also search for housing on the private market, however they should bear in mind that in Germany most of the flats come unfurnished.

Many cultural events are hosted throughout the year, whether it be concerts, sports events or festivals. Museums and art galleries are spread across the old city center, showcasing modern art and historical artefacts. Cottbus is famous with its green areas that make one feel like in paradise, especially in summer. The old and new parks mostly in the surrounding area of the city have become its trademark and some of them are among the most visited attractions. There is even a forest called the Spreewald where people often go to admire the unspoiled nature or for different recreational activities. Sports are cherished here, especially track and field where Cottbus specifically has achieved many awards in this area. Students who love being active can visit the sports complex where they will find modern training equipment in the gyms or outdoor facilities. Going out is a must, especially for students, and Cottbus has exactly what young people are looking for. There are many options when it comes to choosing a place for a party or dancing, be it in terms of attending events organized by the university campuses, or going to one of the city’s famous clubs playing various types of music every night. Throughout the city there are also many bars, restaurants or shisha places for those who want to try something different or quieter than a club

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN COTTBUS

One of the bigger challenges among students is often their financial state and this is why most of the students are immediately starting to look for a job in order to support themselves. In Germany native and foreign students are allowed to work during their lecture periods, however there are certain requirements in terms of the working hours and work permits for international students. Jobs can be found either for the university or outside of it in the city. All of the degrees obtained from the BTU are recognized internationally, however for those who wish to continue with their lives in Cottbus there are many career opportunities as well. Here the economy has been relying mainly on five industries that have been funded and developed by the government. Media and communication technology, energy sector, automotive research and development, metal production and last but not least food production are the five main industries that operate at full power and maintain the city’s strong economy.
