Duisburg is a city German city located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. With its total area of 232.82 km2, the city of Duisburg is the fifth largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the fifteenth biggest city in Germany. Despite its size, the city of Duisburg offers many opportunities to young people, including an excellent level of higher education. The local University of Duisburg-Essen, with campuses in both cities, was opened in 2003 and is considered the newest and youngest university in Germany. Moreover, it is among the largest universities in the Federal Republic. The higher education institution is home to more than 35, 000 students in total, of which approximately ten percent are internationals. The university offers many different degree courses in fields such as computer science, economics, mathematics, and others. The main language of instruction at the university is German. However, numerous degree courses are also offered in the English language. The higher education institution has partnerships with other universities both in and outside Europe and welcomes hundreds of exchange students every semester. Students in Duisburg can either live in a student dormitory or go for private accommodation and find a room to rent in a shared flat. Renting a room in a student dormitory is considered the cheapest accommodation option. Usually, a room there comes at the price of between 260 and 280 EUR per month per person. Private accommodation, however, is more expensive. Renting a single room in an apartment costs around 320 to 400 EUR per person, including the bills.
