The city of Freiberg (also known as the administrative center of Mittelsachsen district) is situated in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. With its total area of 48.05 km2 and population of around 40,885 people, it represents the mining and smelting industries that dominated in the past. Nowadays locals still honor it, as it is the home of the oldest university of mining and metallurgy in the word – the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. Woods surround a great part of the town, as well as meadows and great fields. The mostly spoken language in Freiberg is German. The spirit of the miners is in the air, including on the walls of many buildings painted with the words of famous miners’ greetings. The weather in Freiberg provides pleasant average temperatures of 20 to 25 °C during the warmest months. The precipitation in the region is almost permanent, although February is considered the driest month of the year. In July many citizens of Freiberg prefer to go outside the town, because it is the month with the highest percent of rainfall. Even in the wetter months, people still find many reasons to visit and stay in town. Freiberg can be reached by hourly trains from Dresden, Chemnitz, Zwickau, and Hof. Moreover, there are nine urban bus lines operating in the town. However, many inside routes provide the opportunity to walk on foot, so one can enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

STUDYING IN FREIBERG

The Freiberg University of Mining and Technology provides 65 study programs and can guarantee quality education for foreigners, as it has international programs taught in English, apart from the ones in German. It has established itself as one of the best universities in the world in the field of mining engineering. The university is a great choice for those who dream to study in the sphere of Natural Science, Engineering or Business Administration. The education’s main focus is on Materials, Environment, Energy, and Geography. Among the Master’s programs taught in English are “Sustainable and Innovative Natural Resource Management” (SINReM), “Computational Science and Engineering”, and “Sustainable Mining and Remediation Management”. Practice is a significant part of the studies in the university. Students can apply their knowledge to real working environment in the training mine. Everyone can be admitted to different programs based on their performance and free of tuition fees. Only a registration fee of about 84 EUR per semester needs to be paid. However, the case is not such with students who are planning to get a second Master’s degree. They need to pay a fee of 300 EUR per semester. Thanks to the university, international students have formed a great community and are enjoying the reasonably priced living expenses. When it comes to accommodation, the Student Services Office offers rooms in the dormitories, for which students should apply as soon as possible. Monthly rents are between 180 and 250 EUR per person plus utilities. For those seeking private space, rental companies offer single apartments, either furnished or unfurnished. The prices are higher, but there is a range of options. What is more, students are also offered apartments for shorter stays, in case they decide not to stay in Freiberg during the entire semester.

The rich cultural heritage of the town allows people to expand their knowledge of the history of Germany. The downtown of Freiberg is well-preserved and looks like a fairytale museum with many ancient buildings. An example of a must-visit place is the local theater, being one of the best representations of the past, often presenting different plays and concerts. Another event not to miss is the Bergstadtfest in June, during which young people can have fun, listen to music and drink traditional beer. Nature around the town also offers many beautiful places to relax or hike. The Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) or the Tharandter Forest are great for weekend breaks. As for nightlife in Freiberg, students can go to the local bars, where they can hang out with friends and other students. Although Freiberg is rather small, there are still nice places to party, such as Mundloch Bar or the local Stadtclub.
