Geisenheim is a small but cozy German city in the federal state of Hesse that lies on the right bank of the Rhine river. In a total area of 40.34 km2, there are nearly 12,000 people living, studying and working in the city of Geisenheim. However, approximately ten percent of the people in the city are internationals from different parts of Europe, mostly coming from Austria, Greece, and Croatia. The official language in the city of Geinsenheim is German, of course, but it is a common thing for the people living there to speak English as well. The climate in the city of Geisenheim can be classified as oceanic, with both mild summers and winters. The warmest months in the city are July and August, when temperatures go up to 24 and 25°C on average. In December and January, temperatures are between 4 and -2 °C. Just like every other city in Germany, Geisenheim also has a safe and well-organized public transportation network. It consists of a railway and several bus lines that run through the city area. From Geisenheim’s main train station, also called Geisenheim Hauptbahnhof in German, one can reach easily other cities in the area, including Wiesbaden, Frankfurt am Main, and Mannheim. Located only twenty kilometers and half an hour away by train, Frankfurt will be the ideal destination for a day trip or a whole weekend getaway. STUDYING IN GEISENHEIM

The city of Geisenheim offers a very relaxing atmosphere, as well as an excellent level of higher education. The University Geisenheim was founded in 2013, and is considered a “new type” of higher education institution that perfectly combines education, research, and practice. Currently, the University is home to almost 2,000 students, of which 15 percent are foreigners. The University offers Bachelor, Master, and doctoral programs. Geisenheim University provides students with many interesting degree courses, including Landscape Architecture, International Wine Business, Enology, Food Safety, and many others. Even though the official language of instruction at the university is German, there are many courses that are taught in English as well. When it comes to student accommodation in the city of Geisenheim, students can choose between living in the student halls of residence and finding a place by themselves. However, there are only two residences situated in Geisenheim, and the majority of the students prefer to live there because it is considered the cheapest type of accommodation. In the city, students can expect to pay between 190 and 220 EUR per month for renting a room in the dormitories. For those who prefer private accommodation and want to find a room in a shared flat, prices usually are between 250 and 300 EUR per month, while one-bedroom apartments and studios cost 300 to 500 EUR with all the bills included. All prospective students are strongly advised to apply as early as possible for their accommodation because the city is small and even private accommodation options are limited.

The quality of education a university offers is important to every prospective student, but university life is not only about studying hard. The city might be small, but there are many things students can do during their spare time there. An interesting fact about Geisenheim is that the place is also really famous among people in Germany as “Weinstadt” (Wine Town in English). The reason behind is that the city produces a high-quality crisp and fresh Riesling wine. In fact, there are seven vineyards based both in the city and in the surrounding area, and four of them are actually pretty big. Tourists from all around Germany, as well as people living in Geisenheim tend to go to the local Weingut Karlo Dillmann vineyard during weekends. The atmosphere there is pretty amazing, and people can fully relax while enjoying the beautiful view with a glass of exceptional wine in their hands. Another great place in the city of Geisenheim is Schloss Johannisberg. The beautiful castle stands on a top of a hill with breathtaking views to both the vineyards and the Rhine river. It is one of the best places in Geisenheim and as a bonus, their people will find a great restaurant to have a delicious meal before heading out for enjoying a glass of wine.
