GOTHA AT A GLANCE

Gotha is a small but really cozy and beautiful city in the federal state of Thuringia in the south part of Germany. The city’s total area amounts to nearly 70 km2, with about 46,000 people living there, which makes Gotha the fifth-largest city in the state. The official language in Gotha is German. The city’s climate can be defined as warm and temperate, with significant rainfall during the year. Summer in the city feels really nice and warm, while the winter feels very cold. During July and August, temperatures usually go up to 22 and 23°C but in December, January, and February, temperatures are between -3 and 3 °C. The city of Gotha is not big, therefore it is easy to reach everything within the city area by foot or by bike. Even so, the town does offer its inhabitants an excellent public transportation network that consists of several buses and also a railway. The buses connect all parts of the city as well as the suburban area. However, the most convenient and therefore most preferred way to travel in Germany is by train. Trains are usually on time, and in ninety percent of cases it is way faster to reach a particular destination by train than by bus or even by car. From Gotha, students can explore other interesting cities in Germany that are only an hour or an hour and a half away by train, including Halle, Leipzig, and Brunswick. Students have the opportunity to escape for the weekend and spend it in another city, collecting memories for a lifetime.

STUDYING IN GOTHA

Despite the fact that Gotha is a relatively small city, it does, however, provide excellent educational opportunities to students. The Thuringian University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration, founded in 1994, it is home to almost 400 students. It is an administrative, non-statutory higher education institution that provides enrolled students with practice-oriented education, rather than simply with theoretical knowledge. The university provides students with the opportunity to choose between the training program in Local Administration & General Public Administration and a degree course in Taxation. Depending on the chosen course, students will be taught in subjects like Civil Law, Administrative Sciences, Economics, and many others. However, both programs are entirely taught in German. Choosing a university and the right degree course is very important for each prospective student. So is finding a good and affordable student accommodation. However, sometimes it is not easy to find the balance between quality and price when it comes to student accommodation. In the city of Gotha, students can either live in a shared flat with other students where each has a separate bedroom but kitchen, bathroom, and living room (if there is any) is shared. This is the easiest way to find a place to live because in smaller cities, most of the flats for rent are taken pretty fast. Single bedrooms cost between 190 and 300 EUR per month with all the bills included. Of course, location and the overall size of the flat matters in terms of rent, hence the difference between prices. However, some students prefer to live alone without sharing rooms with other people; they can try to find studios or one-bedroom apartments to rent. Those students will have to consider a bigger amount of money for monthly rent – approximately 400 to 500 EUR.

GOTHA LIFESTYLE

The quality of the education that a university provides is of high importance, and so is the chosen degree course. However, student life is not only about studying hard. When free of classes, students have so many options with regard to how to spend some quality time in the city, especially in the evening. In fact, there are some clubs which are pretty famous among domestic and foreign students in the city of Gotha, one of them being the Upper Club. It is located in the city center, and students love it because there, the best cocktails in town are made and prices are still fair even for that quality of service. When students want to go somewhere where they can have a cup of excellent coffee while catching up with a good friend, Rick’s Café Américain is the place.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN GOTHA

Every student who is about to graduate soon begins to consider some employment opportunities and options for after graduation. The city of Gotha is small but has a great location, namely in the center of the continent, with some major European cities located really close by. Many students consider looking for job or traineeship positions in big cities and pretty often, graduates from Gotha choose to go to Leipzig. There, young people have much more opportunities to find their dream job and start building a successful career.
