GUSTROW AT A GLANCE

The seventh-largest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the city of Güstrow with a population of a bit over 29,000 people. As almost in any other city in Germany, the presence of historical buildings and landmarks is quite strong, which is one of the things Güstrow is popular for. Many architectural styles can be seen around the streets in the Old Town, with the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance being the predominant ones. The Güstrow Palace is probably the most famous landmark in the city and the most important Renaissance castle in the whole country as it is largely preserved in its original state. Nowadays, the Palace displays a delightful collection of antique ceramics, paintings, a theatre and stucco-decorated rooms dating back from 1558. Apart from the rich historical heritage, the city is surprisingly diverse, offering numerous cultural and leisure activities along with a friendly and peaceful atmosphere perfect for studying and living. The climate here is rather continental due to the location of Güstrow within the inner parts of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state. Temperatures in summer range between 18°C and 25 °C, with July being the hottest month. In wintertime the weather is relatively mild, with the coldest months being January and February when temperatures reach -1°C to -3 °C. Thanks to its central location, Güstrow is an ideal point of departure for different excursions around the country. From here travel enthusiasts can use the S-Bahn railway service and travel to nearby cities like Schwaan and Rostock or even Berlin. Getting around within the city can be done by foot since most of the places are within a short walking distance. However, the local public transport is also available, with four bus lines operating throughout the all areas of Güstrow.
