STUDYING IN HAGEN

The city of Hagen offers not only an amazing and relaxing atmosphere but also an excellent level of higher education. In fact, the city is home to one of the biggest higher education institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia, the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, which has campuses in five different German cities, including one in Hagen. Over 14,000 students are currently studying in the higher education institution and about twenty percent of them come from all around the world. The university offers fifty-two different Bachelor and Master degree courses in areas such as informatics, engineering, natural science, business management, and many others. Even though the majority of the courses are entirely taught in German as a main language of instruction, numerous degree courses are also offered in the English language. When it comes to student accommodation in the city of Hagen, prospective students can choose between living in a student dormitory, also called student hall of residence, and renting a private place for themselves. For exchange students or full-time foreign ones, the International Office at the university provides assistance in finding the right accommodation. The most common choice of accommodation type among students is living in the dormitories. However, higher education institutions cannot guarantee every student in the city a room in a dormitory. The accommodation service in whole Germany operates on the first-come-first-serve-basis which means that the sooner students apply, the higher the chances are for them to get a room in the student halls of residence. The typical monthly price for a room in a student hall of residence is between 195 and 350 EUR (all bills included) but it strictly depends on the type of room. Of course, there is also an option for students to find and rent a room in a shared flat with other students. There, however, prices are higher and range between 250 and 400 EUR per month.
