With a population of nearly 67,000 people, Herford is located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state. The city lies in the lowlands between the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehen Hills, with the rivers Aa and Werre flowing straight through the city. The Hanseatic city owes its international recognition to the MARTa Herford museum, a building with an unusual architecture resembling a mysterious object from outer space. However, it is not only the appearance that distinguishes this museum from the others but also its philosophy and international focus. The amount of rainfall is equally distributed throughout the year, with relatively mild temperatures in summer and winter. During the months from June to August the days are warm and sunny with temperatures varying between 18 °C and 25 °C. Winters are rather cold with temperatures dropping below 0 °C. Herford has a favorable location as it is within a close proximity to several bigger cities like Hannover, Bielefeld and Paderborn that can be reached by train. The local public transport is also well developed with city buses operating within all parts of the city. On weekends and public holidays, night buses are also available for use in the city area.

STUDYING IN HERFORD

Since 1948, Herford has been the seat for the College of Church Music, an institute of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and the only protestant church music academy in northwestern Germany. Since 2016 the university has opened a second campus in Witten with study programs in the field of Church Popular music. Currently the institute trains around 40 students through different degree courses both at Bachelor’s and Master’s level with a duration of eight and four semesters, respectively. The main focus of the education falls on Musicology, Music Management and Church Popular Music, and is aimed at training talented and ambitious young adults into becoming full-time church musicians. Studying abroad often poses challenges for students who have never had the chance to live on their own. Amongst the first priorities of almost all international students is the search for a comfortable and inexpensive accommodation that will be their home throughout their student life. Thanks to the housing market in Herford, students should quite easily find the ideal place to live on the housing market of the city. Even though the College of Church Music does not have a student residence hall, it is willing to help young adults with the search of an accommodation.

Students living and studying in Herford can actually do many things in their free times, although it might seem that there is not much going on because of the city’s compact size. However, a wide range of cultural and leisure activities are available to all citizens and tourists throughout the year. The College of Church Music also participates actively in ensuring a lively concert scene in the city and region. The Herford Choir Festival takes place every two years where renowned artists and major orchestras perform. In summer Herford becomes the central Westphalian hub for multiple organ concerts where students of the university take part as well. Such events create multiple opportunities for young adults who are organists or choirmasters to bring what they have learned at university to fruition through concerts and evening music performances. Life in Herford does not always boils down to church music as there are plenty of other activities such as going to the city theatre where different cultural and art performances are shown. Students can enjoy a night out with their friends in the local cinema where they can watch the latest blockbusters, or else in one of the bars and pubs along the streets of the Old Town center. Moreover, students can also practice their favorite sport in their free time by choosing one of the 66 sports clubs offering more than 50 different sports. H2O Herford is the place where athletes, swimmers and all pool lovers can enjoy several sports and benefit from leisure facilities offering wellness programs, scuba diving and swimming lessons, adventurous slides and many more activities. Furthermore, if Herford ever feels too small, students can easily explore the country by visiting the nearby cities like Bielefeld and Hannover.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN HERFORD

Some students choose to or often have to work throughout their studies, especially while in a foreign country. In Germany students are allowed to work on a part-time contract for no more than 15 to 20 hours per week during their lecture periods. Full-time employment is allowed only during the semester breaks. Some individuals, however, might face further requirements and restrictions depending on their country of residence.
