Hof is a small German city in the federal state of Bavaria. The city lies on the Saale River and is really close to the Czech border. On a total area of 58.02 km2, there are almost 50,000 people living, working and studying in the city of Hof. The official language spoken is German. In general, the climate in the city of Hof is oceanic, with rainfalls during the whole year. Summer is warm, while winter is usually cold and windy. Temperatures in January and February are between -4 and 0 °C. In July and August, temperatures go up to 24 °C. The city of Hof has an excellent and reliable public transportation network that consists of twelve bus lines and a railway. The buses connect each and every neighborhood with the city center while trains connect Hof with other German cities, as well as with the neighboring countries. For example, a single journey to the Czech capital – Prague, takes approximately three to four hours by train one way and costs between 12 and 20 EUR only.

STUDYING IN HOF

For each and every prospective student who is highly motivated and wants to receive an excellent level of higher education, the city of Hof will be the right choice. Founded in 1994, Hof University of Applied Sciences is currently home to 3,000 students from 100 different countries. The university combines practice-oriented focus with modern and well-equipped classrooms and laboratories. Moreover, the higher education institution offers a wide spectrum of degree courses. From Business through Information Technology to Engineering, there will be something for almost everyone. Even though German is the main language of instruction at the university, numerous degree courses are taught in English as well. This is one of the many reasons more than fifteen percent of all enrolled students are actually coming from foreign countries. Choosing a university and the right degree course is important for each prospective student. So is finding good and affordable student accommodation. However, sometimes it is not possible to find a balance between quality and price when it comes to student accommodation. In Hof, the cheapest and most convenient type of student accommodation is the student hall of residence. Students can expect to pay between 200 and 350 euros per month for a room in the dormitories. However, places are strictly limited and students need to apply as early as possible if they want to get a room in the student residences. Of course, the rest of the students can still look for private accommodation. Most commonly, they find rooms to rent in shared flats for which they pay between 300 and 400 EUR per month, depending on the location and the size of the room.

Besides the high level of higher education, the city of Hof can also offer an exciting student life that includes many places to visit. If someone wants to enjoy some local food, Restaurant Season will be the perfect place. Everything there represents German cuisine and is really, really delicious. Moreover, it is suitable for both vegan and vegetarians. Apart from that, there are many cozy and unique restaurants located in the city center that can turn into ideal places to get to know Germany and the local people better. The city can also offer really good nightclubs. The most popular one is Johnys. In fact, it is maybe the only bar that happens to be full of students from Thursday through Saturday every week. Prices are good and the cocktails are amazing.

Hof’s local economy is mainly focused on manufacturing, wood processing and material production. Many graduates stay to work in one of the many local companies in the city of Hof. However, others prefer to relocate after graduation. By graduating from a good higher education institution in Germany, graduates have many doors wide open for them in terms of career opportunities. Students from Hof can go to Dresden, Leipzig or even Prague. Bigger cities usually provide a bigger variety of job options and opportunities to grow and create a successful career.
