ILMENAU AT A GLANCE

This cozy little city is located in the state of Thuringia in the heart of Germany and within a close proximity to the Thuringian forest. Once a mining town, Ilmenau has flourished ever since and become a beautiful modern city, famous for its Technical University attracting many students every year. The town is also often associated with Goethe as he paid numerous visits to Ilmenau and even worked here. Today many visitors come to the city to walk the pathways that once the poet himself walked following the places in Ilmenau where he used to work, write and draw. Similarly to the rest of the Thuringian state the climate here is temperate and might sometimes show continental features since Ilmenau lies in the southern part of the state. Summers here are warm and humid, winter are cold and sometimes last longer. The public transport in the city is serviced only by buses with lines covering the entire town. Another great thing about Ilmenau is that it is located closely to the two largest cities in Thuringia-Erfurt and Nuremberg that can be reached by train in no time.

STUDYING IN ILMENAU

Ilmenau University of Technology is the only higher education institute in the city with a total of five faculties and more than 7,000 students. This university would be perfect for those who wish to study in the fields of Mathematics, Engineering, Physics and Media and Communication. The international aspect is well developed; the university accommodated more than 1,500 foreign students in the past year. Although knowledge of the German language is required for the Bachelor degree courses, international students can benefit from taking courses taught entirely in English at Master’s level. The university has also a modern research center contributing to the new approaches implemented in the teaching methods and also to the rapid development of different industries in the city. Accommodation can be found with the help of the student’s organization Studentenwerk managing the ooms or individual studios in student residence halls around Ilmenau. It is recommendable to start the application process as early as possible as availability might be limited towards the start of the semester. Alternatively, applicants can also go for shared flats or rooms offered on the private housing market. A good idea would be to start off with a room in a hostel for couple of days, since finding the most suitable place to live would be much easier once established in Ilmenau. The city is also believed to be one of the three most affordable cities in Germany so finding an accommodation off campus should not pose any challenge for students.

Much of the lifestyles here somewhat revolves around the young people coming for their studies here. Many groups composed of students are organizing events on and off the premises of the campus where everyone can join and have fun while meeting new people. Sports activities organized by the University Sports Center and carried out in modern facilities for training are available to all members of the TU Ilmenau. The surrounding area of the Thuringian forest and mountains are perfect for hiking, cycling or walking tours in nature. Students can also enjoy evening entertainment in various forms around Ilemnau by visiting one of the four student clubs located on the premises of the campus or one of the many smaller bars and pubs around the city. During the day young adults can stroll down the streets and have a cup of coffee or tea or visit one of the retail outlets for shopping. Around the town center one can also find other fun activities such as bowling alleys and a cinema, or during summertime attend one of the many festivals and fairs with live music, street food and traditional German beer.
