Kaiserslautern is a German city in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Spread across its total area of 139.74 km2, there are almost 100,000 people living, studying and working. Moreover, approximately eleven percent of the city’s inhabitants are internationals coming from all around the world, but the majority of them are originally from Syria and Portugal. The official language in the city of Kaiserslautern is German; however, the majority of the inhabitants do speak at least a basic level of English as well. The climate in Kaiserslautern can be defined as moderate with warm summers and relatively cold winters. From June through August or even September, temperatures reach 23 to 24°C. During January and February, temperatures are between -2 and 6 °C, with snowfall in January. All cities in Germany have a reliable public transportation network, and so does Kaiserslautern. It consists of bus lines and a railway. The buses connect all the neighborhoods and suburban areas with the city center, while via train Kaiserslautern is connected with the rest of the country. The city is located in the middle of Europe, meaning that there are many places that can be easily visited from Kaiserslautern. Mannheim and Karlsruhe are really close and it takes between 40 minutes and an hour by train to go there from Kaiserslautern. Moreover, all semester ticket holders can even travel within the area of their university absolutely for free. There are also direct trains from Kaiserslautern to the beautiful French city of Strasbourg for approximately 15 to 20 EUR one way, and it takes not more than an hour and a half by train to get there.

STUDYING IN KAISERSLAUTERN

The city of Kaiserslautern can offer not only many travel opportunities but also an excellent level of higher education. The local University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern was founded in 1971 and currently is home to almost 7,000 students. In fact, every semester the University attracts hundreds of exchange students that choose to spend several months studying and living in Kaiserslautern. The University aims to provide all students with a practice-oriented education and prepare them better for a successful career in the future. On offer is a big variety of different degree courses students can choose from, including “Business Studies”, “Information Technology”, “Engineering Science”, and many others. Even though the main language of instruction at the local university is German, there are numerous degree courses taught in English, too. After choosing the degree course that best suits their interest, all students need to find a place to live during their studies. Prospective students who want to study in Kaiserslautern can either apply for the student halls of residence or look for private accommodation themselves. Usually, living in a student hall of residence is considered the cheapest type of student accommodation in Germany. In the city of Kaiserslautern, there are several student dormitories, and depending on the size and location of the place, students can expect to pay between 230 and 300 EUR per month for a room there. When it comes to private accommodation, students can share a flat with other students, where each has its own bedroom, or they can find a studio/one-bedroom flat to rent only for themselves. For a single room in a shared apartment prices are between 280 and 360 EUR per month including all the bills. Studios and one-bedroom apartments are more expensive and come at a price of 400 to 550 EUR per month.

KAISERSLAUTERN LIFESTYLE

Kaiserslautern is not a big city but the advantage is that it is pretty easy to get around by bike. However, the fact that the city is small does not mean that students will be bored – quite the contrary. In fact, smaller cities are cheaper in terms of living expenses such as rents, prices at restaurants and bars etc.. There are many great restaurants in the city, and the Old Town is full of bars and party venues students enjoy spending time at. Where all the students go is Markthalle Music Club. It is always full from Thursday through Saturday, so much so that sometimes it is hard to even find a place to stand there. The Club is ideal for students who want to meet new people and get wild. Another famous place among students is the Underground club. Usually, students go there when they want to dance and have a memorable evening. Also, the music is different – from radio songs through rock to heavy metal, there is something for every taste.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN KAISERSLAUTERN

The city of Kaiserslautern is well-known for its technology development and innovation. In fact, during the last decade, the place gained a reputation of being the center of information technology. There are some companies in the city that play an important role as leading employers, such as Adam Opel AG (a famous German automobile manufacturer) and Empolis GmbH. Many students find interesting part-time positions there and do their internship in those companies, while graduates have the opportunity to grow a career from scratch there. Of course, those who prefer to look for employment opportunities in bigger cities can look for job openings in Mannheim or Karlsruhe.
