KLEVE AT A GLANCE

Kleve is a small and cozy city located in the lower Rhine region of northwestern Germany. It lies really close to the border with the Netherlands. Its total area equals almost 100 km2 and there are over 52,000 people living, working or studying in the beautiful city of Kleve. In fact, around twelve percent of the people living in Kleve are internationals from other European countries, the majority of which come from the Netherlands and Poland. The official language spoken in Kleve is German, of course. However, because of the city’s close location to the Dutch border, many people speak Durch and English as well. The climate in the city of Kleve can be defined as oceanic, with warm summers and cold winters. During December, January and even February, temperatures in the city are between 2 and -2 °C, while in July and August, it go up to 26 °C. The city of Kleve, just like every other German city, has an excellent and reliable public transportation network that consists of buses and a railway. While buses connect each and every part of the city with the city center, the railways connect the city with the rest of Germany as well as with the neighboring countries, such as the Netherlands. In less than two hours one way, students in Kleve can visit the exciting Dutch capital, Amsterdam, and have an amazing weekend getaway in exchange for less than twenty EUR both ways. Moreover, only twenty kilometers away from the city center is located the Dusseldorf Weeze Airport. It offers direct flights to some major cities, such as Berlin and Hamburg, as well as to vacation destinations like Ibiza and Tenerife.

STUDYING IN KLEVE

Despite its size, the city of Kleve has much to offer in terms of higher education. The Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Kleve provides a high quality of education, combining modern teaching methods with practical work in labs. Currently, the higher education institution is home to around 8,000 students from both Germany and all around the globe. Moreover, twenty percent of all the students enrolled at the university are internationals. The university offers a wide choice of degree programs – from Engineering through Economics and Social Sciences, the institution has something for almost everyone. Numerous degree courses are taught not only in German as a main language of instruction but also in English. Prospective students can choose between studying part-time only, or full-time. When it comes to student housing, what pretty much every student is looking for is a balance between quality and price. Whether it be full-time students or exchange students, the International Office at the university provides assistance to anyone in finding the right accommodation. The most common choice of accommodation type among students in Kleve is living in the dormitories. However, higher education institutions in Germany cannot guarantee every student in the city a room in a dormitory. The accommodation service in whole Germany operates on the first-come-first-serve basis, which means that the sooner students apply, the higher are the chances for them to get a room in the student halls of residence. The typical monthly price for a room in a student hall of residence is between 200 and 300 EUR per month (all bills included) but it strictly depends on the type of room. Of course, there is also an option for students to find and rent a room in a shared flat with other students. There, however, prices are higher and are usually between 260 to 400 EUR for a single room in a shared flat. Studios come at a price of 360 to 550 EUR per month.

As mentioned before, the city of Kleve is based right next to the border with the Netherlands and therefore the city’s culture can be defined as an interesting mixture between both German and Dutch features. Kleve has relaxed atmosphere typical for small cities and a beautiful architecture that can make everyone feels like home. However, the city is full with students and there is no place for boredom. Kleve might be small, but it can offer an amazing nightlife to the students in the city. Jugend- und Kulturzentrum Radhaus is a place where students can enjoy life music almost every night. Le Journal is the next spot in the city where student love to go when they really want to party. In addition to a great music, cocktails are really good and not expensive, which makes Le Journal an ideal place for those students who enjoy clubbing but still have a budget to stick to. Moreover, the city center of Kleve is full with amazing cozy restaurants which offer delicious local meals.

Among the most developed sectors existing in Kleve are the manufacturing industry, the tourism sector, the service sector, as well as retail and commerce.
