Krefeld, also known as Crefeld until 1929, is a German city in North Rhein-Westphalia region, located only ten kilometers west of the Rhine River. In its total area of 137.68 km2, there are over 220,000 inhabitants living in the city of Krefeld. Nowadays, more than ten percent of Krefeld’s population is from foreign countries, mostly from Turkey, Poland, Italy and Syria. The residents of Krefeld speak the so-called Hochdeutsch which is standard German language. However, the native dialect they have is called Low German, or also called Krefelder Plattdeutsch / Krieewelsch Platt. The climate in Krefeld is considered oceanic with relatively cold winter and warm summer. In December and January are the coldest months during the year in Krefeld when temperatures are around -3 to 2 °C. In July and August, temperatures in the city go up to 25-26 °C. One big advantage of Krefeld is the reliable and frequent transportation network it has. The city of Krefeld is very well connected though trams, bus lines, as well as Intercity, Regional-Express and Regionalbahn trains. Not more than twenty five minutes away from Krefeld is Dusseldorf, which is a really good option for an afternoon-getaway from Krefeld. People can travel from Krefeld to Dusseldorf in exchange for 5-7 EUR one way. The city of Duisburg can also be reached within approximately half an hour. However, with a Semesterticket, the trip will be completely for free. The Dusseldorf International Airport can also be reached directly from Krefeld via subway line. STUDYING IN KREFELD
The cozy city of Krefeld offers an excellent level of higher education. The University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein has campuses in both Krefeld and Moenchengladbach. The higher education institution’s campus in Krefeld, students receive in-depth training rooted in innovative learning methods and multidisciplinary seminars. The university offers a wide choice of degree courses in different academic fields, including international business, engineering, finance and many more. Even though the main language of instruction at the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein is German, many courses are also offered in English, which is why higher education institution is becoming a popular choice among students from all over the world. In fact, currently, there are over 14,000 students studying there, twenty percent of whom are internationals. As for the student accommodation, students in Krefeld need to decide whether they prefer to live in a student hall of residence, also called student dormitory, or find a room in a shared flat. Of course, if a student needs to stick to a particular budget, the best option is to apply for a room in a student dormitory. It is cheaper compared to private accommodation, and usually a room comes at the price of 190 – 220 EUR per month. However, the places in student dormitories are limited so prospective students should apply as soon as possible if they want to have higher chances of getting a room for the upcoming semester. The prices for single rooms in shared flats depend on the neighborhood where the apartment is located – the closer it is to the city center, the higher the price will be. Usually, a room costs between 220 and 350 EUR per month with all bills included.

The city’s cultural institutions have much to offer. The so-called “Kulturfabrik” in the city of Krefeld is bringing people from outside the city and the country limits. Many different concerts and theatre performances are held in the Kulturfabrik during the whole year. The place is located close to the main train station in an impressive and old building. A central but at the same time hidden location is the famous Jazzkeller of Krefeld which happens to be one of the oldest jazz clubs in the Federal Republic. Sport aficionados must visit at least once a game of the well-known premier-leage icehockey team Krefeld Penguins – it will be an emotional experience, indeed.

The city of Krefeld can be called a rail hub. Steel, machinery and engineering are also among the most important branches both in and around the city of Krefeld. Moreover, nowadays the textile industry is playing an important role in the city. In collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld, companies from the town are working on finding ways to improve industrial textiles. The chemical and metal industries, automotive engineering are also important branches of industry in and around the city.
