In the heart of the Lippe region, North Rhine-Westphalia lies the city of Lemgo with a population of over 40,000 people. Located between the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands, the Hanseatic town is among some of the most beautiful half-timbered cities in the country. Much of its Renaissance architecture is preserved in its original state and can be seen throughout the town. What makes Lemgo a preferred location among young adults, however, is undoubtedly the local University of Applied Sciences and Arts Ostwestfalen-Lippe. The University plays a crucial role in the city’s mechanical engineering and electronics industry that make the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region one of the strongest ones in Germany. Lemgo lies in a transitional zone where the maritime climate prevails over the continental one. Compared to most of the regions in the country here, summers are rather cooler and winters involve milder temperatures. The annual average temperature is around 9 °C. The Hanseatic city has a very good location allowing easy traveling to and from Lemgo through various means of transportation. Road and rail traffic connect the place with bigger cities like Bielefeld, Hannover and Detmold. Getting around in Lemgo is mostly done through walking or cycling due to its small size. However city buses are also available.

STUDYING IN LEMGO

Established in 1971, the University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) has made its way up in the charts and is now one of the ten best research-oriented universities of applied sciences in Germany. With over 6,000 students enrolled, the University offers various Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in its three campuses in Lemgo, Detmold, and Höxter. The main campus located in Lemgo focuses on the classic Engineering disciplines and also includes unique courses such as Wood and Food Technology and Media Production. OWL has also a strong research profile in the areas of Life Science Technology and Industrial IT. Living abroad, especially if it is for the first time in someone’s life can be somewhat challenging and requires a bit of effort. One of the first things future students should think of when choosing to study in a different country is accommodation. Finding one in Lemgo is not that difficult and usually quite inexpensive compared to some of the bigger cities. Students can choose to live in a student residence hall or find a place on the private housing market of the city. In Lemgo there are several student residences offering single rooms in shared apartments. The rooms come semi-furnished, and the monthly prices depend on the size and the features of each apartment.

The local lifestyle is quite relaxed, featuring a very friendly atmosphere and numerous activities the majority of which are very well-adapted to the student population in Lemgo. For instance, many of the providers here offer special prices to students who want to try out some of the cultural and leisure activities. The local festivals and fairs that are hosted mainly around the Stone Hall market square, which is a great place for newcomers to meet new people and experience Lemgo’s culture and traditions. Regardless of the season, there is always something going on around here that makes the city so vibrant. In summer, locals like to refresh themselves in the Eau-Le Freizeitbad and Saunaland which features indoor and outdoor pools with waterslides and a wellness area with saunas and steam baths for complete relaxation. At wintertime, from the end of November through January, Lemgo attracts more than 20,000 skaters with its skating ring in the Lippegarten. Students can experience many activities throughout the year and even explore the surrounding region along with other German cities on weekends or during their semester break.
