Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, is located only thirty kilometers from the Czech border. With a total area of 37 square miles, the city of Linz is the third-largest city in the country. Currently, there are over 205,000 people living, working and studying in the city, with approximately eight percent of the total amount being foreigners from other European countries, mainly from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Germany, and Turkey. Even though the official language in Linz is German, it is common for the majority of the people to speak at least basic English. The climate in Linz is oceanic and is characterized with warm, sometimes even hot summer and cold winter. In July and Agusut, temperatures in Linz go up to 29 °C, while in December and January, winter temperatures are under 0, around -2 or -3 °C. The city of Linz has an excellent and reliable transportation network that consists of trams, buses, and a railway. Buses and trams connect all parts of the city as well as the suburban areas. Even during the night, there are night buses every hour. However, the most convenient, comfortable and fastest way to travel is by train. Trains connect Linz not only with other cities within Austria but also with the other countries, like the Czech Republic and Germany for example. In only three-hour ride, inhabitants of Linz can visit the Czech Republic’s capital or the second biggest city there – Brno. Thanks to tourist cruise ships, river transport on the Danube river is also possible. From Linz, through Vienna and Prague to Budapest, it is sure that this trip will be full of surprises and amazing views around sunset time. Moreover, even trips to exotic destinations such as Mallorca, Tenerife or Ibiza are possible during both winter and summer months through the Linz Airport, located only fourteen kilometers from the city center of Linz.

STUDYING IN LINZ

One of the biggest advantage students in Linz can benefit from is that the location of the region, Upper Austria, has one of the most stable economies in the whole country. Morever, the city of Linz offers an excellent level of higher education. The Johannes Kepler University in Linz offers degree courses in fields such as law, business, engineering, and even medicine. Even though the majority of the courses are taught entirely in the German language, there are some, especially those at the Business faculty, that are also offered in English as a language of instruction. Overall, in Linz, there are eight higher education institutions – four universities, two teachers training colleges, as well as another two colleges of higher education. Taken together, they provide a wide variety of study choices.
