In the south part of Germany, right on the Saale river, is located the small but beautiful city of Merseburg. Merseburg is part of the Saxony-Anhalt federal state, with about 35,000 people living there in an area of approximately 55 km2. The official language in the city is German. Merseburg has a warm and temperate climate with warm, nice summers but relatively cold winters. All cities in the Federal Republic of Germany have a reliable public transportation network, and the city of Merseburg is definitely no exception. It consists of bus lines and a railway line. Moreover, Merseburg is directly connected with Halle’s city center via a tramway network. A one-way journey takes about 50 minutes. The buses connect all the neighborhoods and suburban areas with the city center, while trains connect the city of Merseburg with the rest of the country. Merseburg is situated only 20 kilometers away from Leipzig, and semester ticket holders can even travel within the area absolutely for free. Chemnitz and Magdeburg are also not far away from the city of Merseburg so students will have plenty of options as to where they can go to during weekends and holidays.

STUDYING IN MERSEBURG
Merseburg is considered a small town which offers an excellent level of higher education. The University of Applied Sciences Merseburg, also known as Hochschule Merseburg, was founded in 1991 and today, it is home to more than 4,000 students. Many exchange students come to spend a semester at the university due to the wide range of degree courses offered. From Applied Informatics, through Sustainable Energy Supply, to International Business, there is something for everyone. German is the official language of instruction at the higher education institution. However, there are numerous degree courses taught in English for international students. After deciding what degree course to study, prospective students have to think about the student accommodation options available in the city. In Merseburg, students can choose between living in the student halls of residence, also called student dormitories, and going for private accommodation by finding a room to rent in a shared flat. The cheapest option is, however, living in a student hall. The rooms are located very close to the campus. Students may expect to pay between 248 and 260 EUR per month. Additionally, all students need to pay a deposit of 300 EUR in cash upon arrival. Renting a room or a studio outside of the student halls can be a little more expensive. A single room in a shared flat close to the city center comes at the price of 300 to 380 EUR per month.

Merseburg offer excellent higher education to all students, but that is not everything. In fact, Merseburg is a really charming place with lots of things to be seen around. Maybe the biggest pride of the city is Merseburg Castle – one of the most impressive renaissance castles with the most complex architecture in the Federal Republic. On a sunny day, students can put on their most comfortable shoes and take a nice walk to the top of the hill, explore the castle, and enjoy the breathtaking view. Small cities like Merseburg are ideal for students because everything is cheaper compared to bigger cities, including rent, food and even prices at cafés and restaurants. In Merseburg, every foodie will find a place to fall in love with. There are so many different restaurants located in town offering both local and international meals. Greek restaurants are a pretty common choice for people living in the city because the food is delicious, portions are big and prices are really fair. Taverna Kreta is maybe one of the most crowded restaurants in Merseburg where people can enjoy delicious mediterranean dishes. Those who prefer to have something spicy and more exotic can check out the Indian restaurant Taj Mahal Merseburg in the city center.
