Muelheim an der Ruhr is a beautiful German city that, as its name implies, lies directly on the Ruhr river. The town is part of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, located only nine kilometers away from Essen and about twenty from Dusseldorf. Over 170,000 people spread across a total area of 92 km2. About ten percent of the city’s population are internationals. Most of the foreign people living in Muelheim come from Turkey, Syria, Poland, or Serbia. The climate in the city can be mostly defined as warm and temperate. That means that the winter in town feels rather cold but the summer is usually very nice and warm. It consists of bus lines, one metro line, and a railway line. In fact, Muelheim is connected directly with Essen via the U18 metro line – a one-way journey takes just a few minutes. The buses connect all the neighborhoods and suburban areas with the city center, while trains connect the city of Muelheim with the rest of the country. Situated right in the heart of the country, Mulheim is very close to many interesting places, such as Dortmund, Dusseldorf, and Essen. Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences is a public university that is headquartered in Muelheim, and has also another campus in Bottrop. The higher education institution was founded in 2009 and offers high-quality education both at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Currently, the university is home to nearly 6,500 students from all over Germany and abroad. Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences provide students with a practice-oriented education in different fields, including engineering, mathematics, business administration, and computer science. The main language of instruction at the higher education institute is German. Therefore, international students have to submit proof of their command of the German language when applying. However, only exchange students coming to study at the university are allowed to choose courses which are taught entirely in English. For more information about the English courses, students need to check with the university prior to applying. Student accommodation is something that concerns every current and prospective student. After students choose a degree course to pursue, they need to find a place to stay, too. In terms of accommodation, most of prospective students are looking to find the perfect balance between price and quality. There are three different student dormitories in the city, and they are all managed by Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg, an independent student services organization. Since the local university does take care of this matter, a room in a student dormitory cannot be guaranteed. In fact, allocation of rooms in dormitories is carried out entirely on a first-come-first-serve basis, so the earlier one applies, the better. Prospective students may expect to pay between 240 and 320 EUR per room. Finding private accommodation in the city usually takes more time and also costs more money. A single bedroom in a shared apartment in the city may cost between 280 and 380 EUR.

The city of Muelheim is a lovely and charming place that provides a relaxing atmosphere for the people living there. Whenever students need to take a break from all the lectures and other university activities, they can go to the city MuGa Park and take a nice walk around it. It is a great place to just sit, relax and forget about all the worries in the world. There are lots of trails, most of which lead to an amazing view of the Ruhr river. And for the colder months, when the weather is not that perfect for a walk in the park, students can visit some of the many cozy cafés in town, such as Sander Konditoreicafé and Nasch Café. Those spots offer not only extremely good coffee, but also some unique sweet delights to try. Both locals and foreigners love going there.
