Neubrandenburg is a city located on the shore of the Tollensesee Lake, in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northeastern Germany. It is situated between the Baltic Sea in the north, Berlin in the south, and Hamburg in the west. That location makes Neubrandenburg a very convenient place to live. Neubrandenburg is a city of approximately 65,000 inhabitants, and 420,000 with the surrounding area. Neubrandenburg is most famous for its distinctive medieval Brick Gothic style buildings and structures, especially the defensive wall of this style which is the most preserved in the world, and the St. Mary Concert Church – home of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra. The town has also established itself as a sports city that has numerous facilities and hosts various sporting events. The official language in Neubrandenburg is German. The climate is moderate with significant amounts of rainfall and an average annual temperature of 8.3 °C. The federal highways B96 and B104 run through the city center, while A20, B192 and B197 run in close proximity to the city. Neubrandenburg is easily accessible by public buses and trains, and for maximum convenience the central bus station is located closely to the train station. Public transport is well organized within the city as well, with buses and taxis running daily. From May to September passenger ships sail on the Tollensesee Lake and offer round trips.

STUDYING IN NEUBRANDENBURG

Neubrandenburg is home to the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences. Founded in 1991, it currently accommodates over 2,000 students. The university provides Bachelor and Master degree programs that are spread among four faculties: the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, the Faculty of Health, Nursing, Administration, the Faculty of Landscape Sciences and Geomatics, and the Faculty of Social Work and Education. Students can choose from Bachelor degree programs in Geoinformatics, Geodesy & Meteorology, Food Technology, Landscape Architecture, Agriculture, Health Sciences, Social Work, Nursing Science, Applied Business Studies and others. Some courses are also offered in the form of dual studies where lectures are combined with high amounts of professional practice, or part-time studies which are perfect for working students. Master degree programs include Food and Bio-Product Technology, Agricultural Production Management, Land Use Planning, Counseling, Management in Social Services and Healthcare, and more. All courses are taught in German, but there are also two international programs which give students the opportunity to study abroad – Agricultural Production Management and Landscape Architecture and Green Space Management. The University of Applied Sciences in Neubrandenburg aims to give students top-level education enhanced with the latest industry technology and learning techniques. The practical approach is very important – every student is sure to spend at least one semester doing practical work. The student organization Studentenwerk Greifwald provides accommodation of four dormitories with a total of 401 rooms. The facilities are located directly on campus, which makes them very convenient. Private renting options are also available with prices ranging between 180 and 380 EUR per month, depending on the location and size of the apartment.

Neubrandenburg is often referred to as “the city of four gates” because of its completely preserved medieval wall and the four gates which are nestled in it –Friedländer Gate, Stargarder Gate, Treptower Gate, and New Gate. They were built in the Late Gothic style and are some of the main attractions in the town. The Marienkirche church, built in the Brick Gothic style, is another preserved medieval building which has been transformed into a concert hall, and is widely known for its Philharmony (Neubrandenburger Philharmonie). The Neubrandenburg Regional Museum exhibits the cultural history of the region and is located in the main tower of the Treptow Gate. Neubrandenburg provides locals and visitors alike with plenty of opportunities for leisure activities. The culture park Neubrandenburg is the perfect place not only for a walk or a picnic, but where various events are also held – folk festivals, food festivals, circus, and more. Furthermore, the annual Four Gates Festival, which combines gastronomy, history, culture and music, takes place in town. There are two cinemas in Neubrandenburg, as well as a theatre. The Tollensesee Lake is another place where you can spend your free time and rent a boat or simply enjoy the view from a café. There is a number of bars and nightclubs located in Neubrandenburg.
