Neuss is a German city located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Neuss is famous as one of the oldest German cities. In a total area of 99.48km2, there are more than 153,000 people living, studying and working in the city of Neuss. However, more than ten percent of the people are internationals from different parts of Europe, mainly coming from Turkey, Greece, and Poland. The language most commonly spoken in the city of Neuss is German, of course, but it is a common thing for the people there to speak English as well, especially those in their 20s and 30s. The climate in the city of Neuss is oceanic, with both mild summers and winters. The warmest months there are July and August with temperatures around 24 to 26 °C. In December and January, temperatures are between 2 and 0 °C. Just like every other city in the Federal Republic, Neuss has an excellent transportation network. It consists of a tram line, railway, and buses. The buses in Neuss are new and clean, they travel throughout the city, as well as across the county to the villages nearby. Trams are operated by the Rheinbahn and connect all parts of the city both underground and overground. It is also possible to travel from Neuss city center directly to the neighboring Dusseldorf, located only seven kilometers away, by tram. The train is probably the fastest way to travel around Germany and additionally, Semesterticket holders can benefit from traveling for free in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.

STUDYING IN NEUSS

Even though it is quite small, the city of Neuss offers students an amazing opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge in the business and the IT field. The Neuss University for International Business offers many degree courses, such as International Business Management, Management and Engineering, Business Information Systems and many others. The degree courses are offered in both German and English as languages of instruction. In addition, students have the opportunity to learn a second foreign language and spend a study semester abroad. The university aims at increasing the number of foreign students coming to study there every year. In Neuss, students can live in the student halls of residences or find a flat to rent and share it with other people. Moreover, renting a studio only for one person is also an option. However, the cheapest option is to live in the so-called student dormitory. The price for one person will be approximately 190 to 250 EUR per month. What students need to keep in mind, especially international ones, is that in Germany student accommodation is on the first-come-first-serve basis and it is better to apply for a room in a dormitory as soon as possible. A single room from a shared flat close to the university building will costs between 220 and 320 EUR monthly, with all bills included. Studios are harder to find and are a bit more expensive – around 400 EUR per month.

NEUSS LIFESTYLE

Even though it is quite small and one of the oldest German cities, Neuss has a lot to offer for students in terms of culture and activities. One of the very first thing that is a must to be visited in Neuss is its art museum, called, Museum Insel Hombroich, and it can be found just a little way south from the city center. There can be found impressive works by the famous Rembrandt, as well as Giacometti, Yves Klein, and many others. For those who prefer spending some time outside, Neuss can offer its beautiful botanical garden. Spending the day surrounded by exotic tree species from China and many other countries and with some of the garden’s inhabitants, such as zebra and king quails, will bring everyone joy and relaxation. Even the food aficionados will be happy to spend time studying and living in Neuss because going out there happens to be fun. A variety of restaurants and pubs can be found in every corner of the city, offering a delicious selection of cuisines and interesting drinks.
