Nuremberg is a German city, part of the federal state of Bavaria. In fact, it is the second-largest city in the region after Munich. Nuremberg’s total area of 186,46 km2 and population of over 500,000 inhabitants makes it the fourteenth biggest city in Germany. However, Nuremberg has been considered a destination for a huge percentage of immigrants. In fact, approximately thirty percent of the current residents of Nuremberg actually have an immigrant background. Nowadays, one-third of the city’s population comes from elsewhere, mostly from Turkey, Romania, and Greece. Even though the official language in the city of Nuremberg is German, Turkish can be also heard really often in the streets of Nuremberg. The climate in the city of Nuremberg is oceanic with cold winter and warm to hot summer. In July and August, temperatures in Bern can go up to 32-33 °C while in December and January it is around -3 to 0 °C. Nuremberg is an industrial city. And as such, it exports a lot of local products to Eastern European countries through the Autobahn. In the city, the traffic becomes an issue from time to time, mainly during rush hour, of course, but it is still times better than the everyday-traffic in cosmopolitan cities like Berlin for example. People who do not drive and prefer to use public transport can benefit from Nuremberg’s excellent transportation network. It consists of buses, subway lines, tram lines, and railway. Many people have heard about the famous Nuremberg–Ingolstadt–Munich high-speed train line with trains that reach up to 300 km/h. They connect the city with the neighborhood ones through the Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof. Moreover, there are IC and ICE trains also traveling from and to the Nuremberg main train station, connecting it not only with other cities around but with the neighborhood countries as well. Only five kilometers away from the city center is located the tenth biggest airport in Germany, Nuremberg Airport. The airport offers direct flights with different airlines within the country of Germany as well as to other European destinations and exotic places like Canary Islands and Egypt, as well as Greece.

STUDYING IN NUREMBERG

Nuremberg does provide many opportunities, including an excellent level of higher education. There are many institutions of higher education in the city of Nuremberg. The local University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, with campuses in both cities, is the eleventh biggest university in whole Germany. The main language of instruction in the university is German, however, many courses are also offered in English. The higher education institution is home to almost 40,000 students and around fifteen percent of them are internationals coming from all around the world with the aim to take the first step towards a brilliant career future. Nuremberg is becoming a popular destination for hundreds of exchange students as well as those who have decided to spend a semester abroad studying and living in a beautiful city. The universities in Nuremberg provide top-quality education in many different fields but student accommodation is also an important aspect for every student, especially for those coming from abroad. The most common option among students is to live in a student dormitory. It is the cheapest and most convenient option since a room in a dormitory comes at the price of 320 to 420 EUR per month, including the bills. In Germany, however, universities are not able to guarantee any student a place in such a student hall of residence. The available places are less than the number of students, therefore everyone who wishes to be assigned a room in a student hall should apply as soon as possible. Fortunately, everyone who does not get a room in a dormitory can still look for private accommodation. That means that students can look for renting a single room in a shared apartment with other students or interns in the city. In case the budget allows it – some can also rent a studio or a one-bedroom flat for themselves and live alone. In any case, students who are about to move to the city of Nuremberg need to keep in mind that the Bavaria area is not the cheapest place to live and private accommodation starts from 380 EUR and can go up to 700 EUR per month, depending on the type of accommodation and its location.

NUREMBERG LIFESTYLE

The city of Nuremberg definitely has a rich intellectual history, mostly reflected in the many museums and art galleries that are based in the town. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum, which represents in a unique way the German history of art, is considered a highlight of the city. The city is also famous for its annual festival – The Nuremberg International Chamber Music Festival which traditionally starts at the beginning of September and in 2021 the festival will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Furthermore, there is a big choice of restaurants, coffee shops, and clubs all around the city. Due to the big percentage of foreigners living in the city, street food, brought from Asia or other exotic places, can be easily found as well. However, Nuremberg is also famous for its traditional food, mostly for the world-known Nürnberger Lebkuchen which is a type of ginger cake, as well as the one-of-a-kind Nürnberger Bratwurst, of course. It is not like any other wurst in Germany, it is thinner and quite smaller – a must for everyone who steps his/her foot for the first time in the city of Nuremberg.

The local economy of the city of Nuremberg is mainly based around traditional and modern markets. Nuremberg is famous for its traditional food production and the food industry, in general, is considered a developing sector in the city. Moreover, ever since the 19th century, the city of Nuremberg is an important industrial center for Germany. To this day, engineering and manufacturing play a very important role in the city’s economy. In fact, world-known leaders such as Siemens, for example, are among the top city’s employers and provide many career opportunities to both skilled workers and graduates in the fields of engineering, manufacturing, as well as management and technology. In addition, internship positions are posted on a regular basis by international companies in the city for both local students and internationals.
