Osnabrück is the third-largest city in Lower Saxony situated between the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest. Osnabrück is often referred to as the ‘’The City of Peace’’ due to the Treaty of Westphalia signed here and in Münster. Some of the most important landmarks in the picturesque city center are the Town Hall, the Stadtwaage and St. Mary’s Church, enhancing the sense of the historical heritage the city has today. Nature not only surrounds Osnabrück but also stretches right into its inner city with beautiful parks and the river Hase, creating a relaxed atmosphere and an ideal place for living. Osnabrück has a warm and temperate climate with warm summers cooled by the west and northwest winds with temperature rising around 22 °C. Winters, on the other hand, can be sometimes quite cold or mild with temperatures remaining above 0 °C due to the unstable weather. Long-lasting rain periods also occur during both seasons as this particular region has a higher precipitation above the national level. Getting around the city is mostly done with the use of public buses operating daily and even at nighttime on Fridays and Saturdays. Many of the local citizens are also very keen on using their bikes as transportation as the city cycling network is available in most districts and distances are not that far apart.

STUDYING IN OSNABRÜCK

Osnabrück University and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, which were both established in the early 1970s, are the only two higher education institutes in the city. Over 25,000 students, separated in almost equal parts between both universities, choose to come and study there because of its high reputation, its variety of degree courses and its teaching and research methods. The Osnabrück University offers more than 170 programs in the fields of Humanities, Science, Business Administration, Law, Social Sciences, taught across nine faculties. The University of Applied Sciences, meanwhile, which also happens to be the largest one in Lower Saxony, has around 110 degree programs and only five faculties. Both universities are supporting the concept of internationalization and are therefore happy to welcome foreign students and refugees. Some courses are taught explicitly in English – for those who are experiencing difficulties with learning the German language. Furthermore, everyone who feels the need for assistance and guidance can turn to the respective university’s International Office, taking care of the needs of foreign students as a whole. Feeling at home is important and one of the key things about it is the place to live. Numerous student residence halls can be found on the territory of Osnabrück offering rooms and flats for about 115 to 498 EUR per month, depending on the type of the accommodation.

Students can do many things in their free time due to the rich cultural life filled with entertaining events, fun festivals and fairs and various outdoor and sports activities. The Hase River runs through the city, and the two lakes in Osnabrück invite nature lovers to explore the beautiful green landscapes around the water basins and relax on their shores on warm sunny days. A visit to the local Botanical Garden at no charge is also a common leisure activity among locals, spending hours contemplating the wonders of nature. Students looking for a bit more fun and excitement must visit the dance clubs and bars where they can enjoy a range of drinks and music genres for every taste.
