REGENSBURG AT A GLANCE
Nominated for a UNESCO world heritage site, Regensburg fascinates with its exceptional medieval architecture that is considered to be the only authentically preserved one in Germany. Similar to Passau, the city sits between the rivers Danube, Regen and Naab in the southeastern state of Bavaria. The historical appearance of the city is only a facade since most of the buildings are actually hiding modern stores, bars and restaurants. Regensburg is divided in two parts by the Danube river yet connected by another famous landmark here - the Stone Bridge dating back to the 12th century. The city has around 1000 different sights waiting to be explored by visitors still testifying to this day not only the rich historical heritage but also the importance of Regensburg as a center of the Roman Empire and a European trading center. The city’s climate oscillates between oceanic and humid continental. With the warmest month being July, summers here are quite warm and dry with temperatures ranging between 24 °C and 26 °C. The coolest month in Regensburg is January, with temperatures reaching -3 °C, making winters here cold and foggy due to the surrounding rivers. Traveling to and from the city is done with the use of trains, intercity buses or cars. The closest bigger cities are Nuremberg and Munich. Public transportation is provided by buses serving 70 lines circulating frequently within all districts of Regensburg. Students who wish to travel either within or outside of the city can benefit from their semester tickets allowing them to use all means of transportation as far as the Semesterticket zone allows them to.

STUDYING IN REGENSBURG
Higher education institutes here are well known for their exceptional contributions in research and teaching in the areas of immunopathology and immunotherapy, transplantation medicine, renewable energy, bioengineering and others. The University of Regensburg is the most attended higher learning institute in the city, with more than 21,000 students enrolled for the past year. As a traditional public university, it covers a broad spectrum of degree courses, including in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences. The university is very important for the city as it has established a University Hospital and is also maintaining the local Botanical Garden. Individuals coming here for their studies can also choose between the two other higher learning institutes in the city: the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences with around 11,000 students and 50 practice-oriented degree courses, and the HfKM Regensburg – College of Catholic Church Music and Musical Education focused on artistic and educational studies. International students choosing Regensburg as their city destination can submit an application for accommodation along with their admission application. This way the International Office can assist them in finding a room or a flat in one of the student residence halls in the city. Rooms are usually furnished, however the other facilities such as kitchens and bathrooms will be shared with other tenants. The prices for most rooms vary between 220 EUR and 355 EUR per month with bills included. There is a certain quota so some students might not get the chance to stay at a student residence and will have to look for housing on the private market instead. All other students coming from Germany can apply for a room directly on the Studentenwerk website. Living in a student residence hall is preferred by the majority of students as, among other things, it gives them the chance to live in a younger environment. However, due to the high demand availability might be limited especially towards the beginning of the semester. The private housing market in Regensburg is also filled with rooms and flats to share so some students might also consider this as an alternative.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN REGENSBURG
The years spent at university are mostly focused on the knowledge and sets of skills students will need in order to land a job after graduation. However, young adults can also use this time to establish connections with representatives from large companies or prepare themselves for the job application and interview processes. The most common way to achieve this is through attending career events and training workshops organized by the Career Service offices located on the premises of each campus. Furthermore, students are also encouraged to engage in internships in order to gain a better understanding of a real working environment. It is recommendable for everyone willing to pursue a successful career to come up with a clear plan or at least an idea of where to start from at the end of their studies. Some graduates might choose to look for career opportunities outside of Germany, whereas others might decide that it is equally possible to establish the foundations of their future careers within the country or even here in Regensburg. Much of the city’s economy is focused on the tourism sector, not least due to its nomination for a UNESCO heritage site. However, other industries such as the electrical and automotive engineering and biotechnology are also very well-developed here due to the many big company names like BMW, E.ON, Siemens and General Electrics that have established their corporations here. Students can even find part-time work here, especially since Amazon has recently opened a customer service site in Regensburg that is also the first one for the whole country. Career opportunities are always available for ambitious and qualified professionals, which is what many of the large companies are looking for in their future candidates. Career opportunities can be viewed in the “Career” section on universitaet.com.
