SALZGITTER AT A GLANCE
Salzgitter is a city located in the southeast part of Lower Saxony. The city bears a rich historical heritage that lefts its marks not only on the city’s architecture but also in its name. Established at the beginning of the 14th century, the farmers that lived in the area back then produced salt for nearly 200 years in the saltworks that can be still seen to this day in the old town of Salzgitter. Other aspects of the town’s history like its industrial flair, are reflected by some of the landmarks located in different areas of the city. Built around brine springs, Salzgitter is also known for being a health resort with its healing springs and thermal baths. Locals and visitors here can also enjoy the idyllic landscapes especially around the Salzgittersee lake, a popular place to visit in the city and a great recreational area. Being located in the Harz foreland, the city is exposed to a rather colder climate and more rainy days throughout the year. The average daily temperatures during summer are varying between 15 and 19°C, and in winter between 2 and 5°C. Traveling to Salzgitter and from Salzgitter to other regions in Germany is possible through the use of train, bus or car. Getting around the city is mostly done with public transport, or with a bike.
