The city is located in the oceanic climate zone, however due to its topographical variability it is often exposed to significantly different values depending on the area. Other than that summers here are usually warm and sunny with an average daily temperature of about 22 °C. In winter January and February are considered to be the coldest months when temperatures can reach -5 °C. Public transport in Schwaebisch-Gmuend is serviced by eleven city bus lines operating throughout all districts of the city. In addition, road and railway connections are also available, making daily commutes to and from the city easier. The closest metropolis to Schwaebisch-Gmuend is Stuttgart, which can be reached within less than an hour.

Schwaebisch-Gmuend is home to two higher education institutions: the University of Education (PH) and the University of Design (HfG). Established in 1825, the PH Schwaebisch-Gmuend is one of six such institutions in the whole Baden-Württemberg state. Today, the University has more than 2,000 students who can choose from a wide range of Bachelor and Master degree programs in Education and Health. What makes this university so popular among young adults are the excellent teaching methods and study conditions comprising of a special consulting concept, an innovative approach and two modern faculties. The latter university was founded in 1909 and is currently educating nearly 700 students. As suggested by its name, the HfG provides degree courses in the fields of Design, yet all five study programs offered here rely not only on innovation but also on scientific findings helping to justify rationally different design decisions. The number of students coming to Schwaebisch-Gmuend from all over Germany and abroad has increased steadily in the past couple of years. One of the primary goals of new students is to find a place to live after they have been admitted to the desired university. Often there are several opportunities for accommodation, of which the most common one is living in a student residence hall. In Schwaebisch-Gmuend this is possible thanks to the Neissestrasse residential house offering 278 single rooms in shared flats. The rooms come fully furnished for a price of 214 EUR per month including all utility bills. Due to the limited availability it is highly recommended that students engage with the application process as early as possible.
