In the valley between the red sandstone covered hills, right on the banks of the Moselle River lies the oldest German city with over 2,000 years of history. Founded in the late 4th century by the Celts and later conquered by the Romans, Trier offers an impressively rich historical heritage with authentic architecture present to this day. The museums and landmarks such as the Imperial Baths or the Porta Nigra are still carrying the ancient spirit. Among the impressive sites are many green lawns and beautiful parks with shady spots where locals often relax during the hot summer days. The city is located in the oceanic climate zone with a rather temperate climate that might sometimes suffer extreme temperatures. Summers here are hot with average temperatures between 21 °C and 24 °C. Winters are cold with temperatures ranging from 0 °C to -1 °C. Public transport in Trier is mostly operated by buses circulating throughout all districts of the city. Furthermore, it is very easy to travel to and from the city as it is well connected with neighbor regions and even with Luxembourg since Trier is only about 20 kilometers away from the border.

STUDYING IN TRIER

Trier has three higher learning institutes that are accommodating more than 20,000 students coming from Germany and abroad. The University of Trier and the University of Applied Sciences Trier are the two most attended institutes in the city, offering a range of innovative courses in the fields of Humanities, Social, Computer and Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Design and others. Both universities are very active in research and often create opportunities for students and tutors to work together on different research projects. The third higher learning institute existing in Trier is the Faculty of Theology that is an independent university regardless of its name. The Theological Faculty is working in close cooperation with the University of Trier offering cross-university programs where students can choose a subject from each institute. Every student regardless of their background can find a place to study and live in Trier. In order to apply for a room or an apartment in a student residence hall, international students should turn to the International Offices in each campus that will assist them with the application process. All other students can apply directly online at any time, however it is recommendable to start this process as soon as possible due to the limited availability and the high number applicants. There are five residential complexes in Trier offering 1,615 rooms fully furnished and with bills included. Prices range between 155 EUR and 715 EUR depending on the type of the accommodation rented. Alternatively, students can also choose to seek for housing on the private market in town where rooms in shared flats or independent studio flats are also available.

TRIER LIFESTYLE

Because the city is rather small in size expats will have the chance to quickly get to know not only Trier but also the people living in it. With its special atmosphere the city creates a nice balance between a calm lifestyle and a range of indoor and outdoor activities keeping the city lively and vibrant. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN TRIER

There are many career opportunities for students throughout and after their studies. Part-time employment is a common necessity among young adults struggling to meet the ends during their student life. This is why working while studying is allowed in Germany in general; however there might be some restrictions depending on the country of residence of a student. All additional information can be communicated with the International Office in each campus. Once all documents are provided, students can seek for job offers within the university campus or outside of it. Some of the most common employment opportunities are in bars, restaurants and shops or in the university library or as an assistant in the International Office and Registration Office. Throughout their studies young adults are often encouraged to engage with all sorts of activities related to their future career paths after graduation.
