WEINGARTEN AT A GLANCE

Weingarten is a town in the Ravensburg district, in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany. It is situated in the valley of the Schussen River and just a few kilometers away from Lake Constance (or Bodensee). Translated literally from German, the name “Weingarten” means “wine garden” or “vineyard”. Accordingly, vineyards can still be seen in the area of Weingarten; wine and fruit production is one of the town’s strongest industries. The town was previously called Altdorf, before it was renamed to Weingarten in 1865, after the Weingarten Abbey, a monastery church on St. Martin's Mount, founded in 1056. The Weingarten Abbey overlooks the town and adds to the picturesque setting of the Black Forest. An interesting fact is that St. Martin’s Basilica is one of the biggest baroque churches in the world, attracting many tourists with its detailed features and grand organ. The climate in Weingarten is moderate all year round with an average temperature of 8.5 °C. There is a significant amount of rainfall yearly. Weingarten is a town with population of 25,000 people. The official spoken language is German. The town is easily accessible by train, bus or lightrail, and buses run daily for the citizens’ convenience.
