Wismar is a small city located in Northern Germany and is also part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region which is connected to the Baltic Sea. In a total area of 41.72 km2, there are over 40,000 inhabitants living, studying or working in the cozy city of Wismar. Wismar, just like any other city in the country, has an excellent and reliable public transportation network. Within the city, citizens may benefit from the bus lines that connect all parts of the city. Another convenient and common means of transportation in Wismar is the bicycle. People can either buy their own bike or rent one when needed – bicycle stations can be found all around the city. Some people prefer to ride a bicycle also because the weather usually allows one to enjoy a bicycle ride – rain is a rare thing in Wismar. Approximately half of the year the weather is rather cold with temperatures between -3 and 10 °C. However, in June, July and August, temperatures are between 21 and 27°C, so citizens can enjoy the summer season in Wismar.

STUDYING IN WISMAR

The city of Wismar offers not only an amazing and relaxing atmosphere but also an excellent level of higher education. The University of Wismar is based at the Baltic coast (only five hundred yards from the harbor), and is considered the third-largest higher education institution in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The university was founded in 1907 and today it offers over fifty different degree courses, mainly in engineering, design, and business. Moreover, in partnership with the European Cruise Academy, the University of Wismar provides students with the opportunity to study maritime studies. Even though German is the main language of instruction, most of the courses, especially those in the business area, are also taught in English which gives international students the option to study in the university without having good knowledge in the German language. The University of Wismar has partnerships many other higher education institutions located in over forty countries around the world and is becoming also a popular choice of study exchange destination for thousands of students from other European countries, as well as from such exotic places as Japan, Cape Town, and Indonesia. When it comes to student accommodation in Wismar, students have to choose between living in a residential home and renting a place themselves. Student’s services in the city of Wismar offer furnished rooms for students only in a couple of modern residential buildings within the town. This is the most convenient and fastest way for students to find a nice and affordable place to live. They only have to contact the university prior to their arrival, so that room can be assigned and all documents be prepared. Wismar’s appearance is also strongly defined by its harbors. Moreover, Wismar, as well as other ports along the Baltic coastline of Germany, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to its unique red-brick architecture.
